Onyang Folk Museum: A Time Travel Experience
▲ Onyang Folk Museum
Nestled in the charming landscape of Asan, Chungcheongnam-do, the Onyang Folk Museum is more than just a space for displaying old artifacts. Since its opening in 1978, it has encapsulated the life and spirit of the Korean people, serving as a sanctuary that gently reminds visitors of 'where we came from' amidst the fast pace of modern society.
▲ Onyang Folk Museum
Covering an area of 64,800 m², the Onyang Folk Museum is a multifaceted cultural space where visitors can see, hear, and experience the living culture of Korea.
Upon entering the museum, the serene atmosphere and well-maintained gardens hinted at the treasure trove of folklore that awaited. I would like to document the emotions and intricate details of the exhibits I experienced during my visit.
▲ Exhibition Hall 1
Exhibition Hall 1 focuses on the 'rites of passage' that individuals experience from birth to death. In the birth and growth section, visitors can observe items placed on the doljabi table, such as thread and coins, along with a lovingly handmade traditional garment for infants, reflecting the deep love of past parents for their children.
▲ Exhibition Hall 1
The wedding and funeral exhibits showcase the elegant traditional wedding attire and the tools used in funerals, highlighting the philosophical depth of the Korean people. Particularly striking were the elaborate decorations of the 'bier', which transformed the sorrow of death into a celebratory festival.
▲ Onyang Folk Museum
In the residential area, the recreated structure of the maru and ondol room allowed visitors to experience the aesthetic of Korean architecture that harmonizes with nature.

The wisdom of dietary culture is illustrated by the traditional jars used for fermenting kimchi, showcasing the pinnacle of fermentation science. The diverse plates and utensils from various regions combine practicality with artistic beauty.
▲ Exhibition Hall 2
Exhibition Hall 2 features the tools imbued with the sweat of our ancestors from a farming society, alongside traces of their spiritual pursuits. The plows, rakes, and nets used throughout the seasons are robust yet intricate tools, allowing visitors to glimpse how our ancestors lived, ate, and dressed in harsh environments.
▲ Exhibition Hall 2
The village entrance guardians and totem poles, as well as remnants of traditional rituals to ward off misfortune, provide insight into the spiritual world of the Korean people.
Exhibition Hall 3 showcases the beauty of traditional hanbok, with its scientific design that varied materials according to the seasons and the subtle hues of natural dyes.
▲ Exhibition Hall 3
The humorous expressions of the masks used in traditional dance evoke the resilience and humor of our ancestors, who found joy even amidst the hardships of life.
▲ Onyang Folk Museum Main Building
The true charm of the Onyang Folk Museum extends beyond the indoor exhibition halls. The main building, designed by master architect Kim Seok-cheol, is a work of art in itself, harmonizing red bricks and tiles in a modern yet traditional aesthetic.
▲ Outdoor Folk Village
The outdoor folk village, with its stone structures, pavilions, and traditional houses, evokes the feeling of walking through a village from the Joseon Dynasty. In particular, the stone towers adorned with spring flowers are a photographer's paradise.
As I left the museum, the image of the weathered wooden furniture and a pair of straw shoes crafted by an anonymous artisan lingered in my mind. The Onyang Folk Museum is not merely a place to preserve 'artifacts', but a sanctuary that safeguards the way of life flowing in the DNA of the Korean people.
