Must-Visit Places in Goesan County

Goesan's Flavor Enjoyed by 320,000 People: Goesan Pepper Festival

The Goesan Autumn Festival was filled with events, including "Find the Golden Pepper".

The autumn harvest in Goesan began with the Goesan Pepper Festival, held from September 3 to 6 at the Goesan Organic Expo Park. This festival was abundant with events and various activities. Here, we introduce the flavors of Goesan encountered at the Goesan Pepper Festival.

Goesan peppers ripen under the hot summer sun and are harvested in August. Grown in the mountainous inland area at an altitude of about 250 meters, the peppers benefit from ample sunlight and significant temperature differences, resulting in superior color, taste, and aroma. The peppers undergo a rigorous quality control process, including multiple washings, drying, and sorting.

Every autumn, the Goesan Pepper Festival connects consumers with Goesan peppers, which are also key ingredients in the Goesan Kimjang Festival held in November.

The festival featured diverse booths selling Goesan peppers, experiences, performances, and exhibitions, primarily centered around the Goesan Organic Expo Park and the Goesan Culture and Sports Center. The main attraction was, of course, the Goesan pepper itself.

Booths operated by local villages such as Sosu-myeon, Cheongan-myeon, and Mungwang-myeon offered Goesan peppers at fixed prices: 16,000 KRW for 600g with stems and 18,000 KRW without. The price per kilogram decreased by 1,000 KRW compared to the previous year, making it a more affordable option for visitors.

At the Goesan Culture and Sports Center, visitors could get closer to Goesan peppers through the Goesan Clean Pepper Contest and the World Pepper Exhibition. The contest, held annually in August, selects the best farm based on criteria such as eco-friendly farming practices, growth conditions, and uniformity of color and type of dried and fresh peppers.

The 2026 winner was a young farmer named Lee Sang-kyu from Jangyeon-myeon. Other awards went to farmers Ahn Byung-seung from Sosu-myeon and Lee Mi-sook from Cheongcheon-myeon.

The exhibition showcased both fresh and dried peppers, highlighting their uniform shape and color, indicating high quality.

Additionally, peppers from various countries, including the USA, Australia, and Canada, were displayed alongside seedlings, showcasing a variety of shapes and colors.

The Goesan Clean Pepper Contest also featured a hands-on experience for making gochujang (Korean chili paste), where participants mixed prepared Goesan peppers with other ingredients, creating their own gochujang. This was a delightful experience for both adults and children.

The festival included various events centered around Goesan peppers, such as the "Find the Golden Pepper" activity, which attracted many participants.

The festival concluded with a celebration of Goesan's vibrant culture through exhibitions and performances, showcasing the beauty of Goesan's landscapes.

The Goesan Pepper Festival, held from September 3 to 6, successfully highlighted the excellence of Goesan Clean Peppers through various events.

Enjoy the superior quality of Goesan Clean Peppers, representing K-food, produced in the high-altitude region.
