Must-Visit Places in Goesan County
In Search of the Old Spirit of Yeonpung: Yeonpung Elementary School, Pungnakheon, and Kim Hong-do
On a day when the sweltering heat began to ease and a cool breeze started to blow, I headed to Yeonpung-myeon in Goesan, Chungbuk, in search of historical charm.
Today's destination is Pungnakheon, which is famous for being the place where Kim Hong-do served as the governor during the Joseon Dynasty.
As I entered Yeonpung Elementary School, two massive trees stood on either side, capturing my attention immediately.
These ancient zelkova trees, appearing to be hundreds of years old, seem to silently witness Yeonpung's long history.
The presence of such grand trees in the schoolyard was impressive and seemed to reflect the school's tradition and dignity.
On one side of the school, I noticed a monument commemorating the 100th anniversary of Yeonpung Elementary School.
A serene hanok building with a sign reading 'Pungnakheon' stands proudly.
Pungnakheon was the Dongheon building of the old Yeonpung-hyeon, where the governor conducted official duties.
Standing in front of Pungnakheon, I recalled the story of King Jeongjo appointing Kim Hong-do as the governor of Yeonpung, urging him to care for the people and paint their lives.
I imagined that Kim Hong-do must have observed the lives of the people while fulfilling the king's command by capturing the breathtaking views of nearby Joryeongsan.
Looking inside Pungnakheon, I felt the traces of old scholars and enjoyed a sense of traveling back in time.
After passing Pungnakheon, I headed towards the playground of Yeonpung Elementary School, where a wide field covered in green artificial grass spread out before me.
Beyond the playground, the majestic mountains of Yeonpung surrounded us like a backdrop, making me envious that children could grow up in such a beautiful natural environment.
Though the old government office site has now transformed into a learning space for children, the warm concern for the safety and health of local residents seems to remain unchanged.
A cute giraffe statue and an apple-shaped stamp tour box, which seems to be the mascot of Yeonpung, were also installed.
Seeing the phrase 'Pungnakheon' on the stamp tour box, I felt that Yeonpung is becoming a tourist destination where history and culture come alive.
After visiting Yeonpung Elementary School and Pungnakheon, the images of the giant zelkova trees, the tranquil Pungnakheon, and the spirit of Kim Hong-do lingered in my mind.
I believe that Yeonpung Elementary School and Pungnakheon are definitely worth a visit for those exploring Goesan, as they offer a glimpse into the old spirit of Yeonpung.
