Must-Visit Places in Goesan County

As winter comes to an end, the frozen rivers begin to thaw. After the rainy season and the arrival of spring, March 5 marks the awakening of frogs from hibernation.

Soon, the sounds of frogs and toads will fill the air along the flowing streams, lakes, and reservoirs.

Before that, fish that had been dormant beneath the water will start to leap joyfully to the surface, becoming more visible.

You can experience this vibrant life of the river at the Chungbuk Aquarium.

Located beside the Goek River, this aquarium is part of the Goesan County fishery product hub.

Since its opening in May 2024, it has become a popular family outing destination in Chungcheongbuk-do.

In October last year, the outdoor pond was renovated, and the fairy tale hall opened. Recently, in mid-February, the insect experience center across from the Chungbuk Aquarium was renewed and officially opened as the Emotional Insect Experience Center.

Visitors can explore the Chungbuk Aquarium, the insect experience center, and the fairy tale hall amidst the beautiful scenery of the Goek River.

During my visit in February, the fairy tale hall was temporarily closed due to the cold weather, but I look forward to returning in warmer spring.

The Chungbuk Aquarium is a place I visit at least once a season, as it provides a lovely break at the end of a stroll enjoying the Goek River's scenery.

With free admission, it’s easy to enjoy the beautiful fish without any worries.

The aquarium is a two-story building, with exhibits connecting from the first to the second floor, concluding with a relaxing area.

Through the large glass walls, you can admire both large and small beautiful fish.

During my visit, I found a thick coat necessary, but it seems spring is finally on its way.

The chill of spring will pass, and winter is coming to an end.

The cycle of nature is unwavering.

The aquarium connects to an arched tunnel aquarium, creating the sensation of penetrating through the middle of the ocean.

Every time I pass through this section, I can't help but exclaim "Wow!"

The Chungbuk Aquarium features a main tank of 305 tons, 62 exhibition tanks, and an underwater tunnel.

Along the viewing path, you can meet 106 species of freshwater fish, totaling 4,600 individuals.

As you ascend to the second floor, you will find the Yeonhak Bridge over the upper reaches of Goesan Lake.

Fish swim gracefully, and aquatic plants adorn the small tanks, while various fish swim beneath the Yeonhak Bridge.

The interior showcases the Goek River's Dalcheon.

If the first floor exhibits vibrant fish around the main tank, the second floor displays even more diverse fish from both domestic and international waters.

Visitors are captivated by the unfamiliar names and appearances of the fish.

As the parade of fish continues, the steps of visitors become increasingly eager.

The Yeonhak Bridge, set against the backdrop of Goesan Lake, has become a photo zone, creating an illusion of being in a vast riverside.

Children and adults alike are enchanted by the unique patterns, impressive sizes, and vibrant colors of the fish.

Children point excitedly, leading to joyful conversations as they track the movements of the fish.

The fish swimming before our eyes display a variety of movements, as diverse as their unfamiliar names and appearances.

We encounter the freshwater fish inhabiting the Goesan Lake, such as the pond snail, loach, and Miho loach.

The fairy tale hall features animals from stories, including rabbits, turtles, and white-cheeked ducks.

The Emotional Insect Experience Center, officially opened in mid-February, consists of a firefly video room and an aquatic insect exhibition hall.

A visit to the Goesan fishery product hub with children brings even more joy.

The Chungbuk Aquarium is located at 43 Sogari-gil, Goesan-eup, Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do.

Opening hours: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM (closed every Monday)

Admission is free.
