Chungju, located in North Chungcheong Province, may not have a sea, but its water-created landscapes are truly impressive.
As you stroll along the rivers and wetlands surrounding Chungju Lake, and walk through areas like Tankumdae and Jungangtap, you naturally feel at ease in the serene atmosphere created by the waterways. The Chungju Aquarium, which opened in October last year, showcases the charm of Chungju all at once and has quickly become a must-visit on travel itineraries.
Situated within the Tankum Park and Neungam Wetland Ecological Park, the aquarium has extended its temporary free admission until 2026, which is great news. This has made it an ideal indoor tourist spot for families to visit without the burden of entrance fees, allowing for comfortable exploration regardless of the weather.
The aquarium operates from 10 AM to 6 PM (last admission at 5 PM) and is closed every Monday.
The exhibition area spans one basement level and three floors above ground.
With over 70 species and more than 2,000 aquatic creatures on display, you can encounter a wide range of fish, from native freshwater species found in Chungju's rivers to various fish from around the world. Notably, you can observe species from the Namhan River system, making it a great opportunity to discuss local ecology with children.
The tanks inspired by Chungju's iconic spots such as Jungangtap, Mokgye Narue, and Chungju Dam stand out. Rather than simply displaying fish, the aquarium connects them to local culture, which adds a unique touch.
The underwater tunnel section is also a highlight. Watching fish swim overhead and the shimmering water filling the space leaves a lasting impression on both children and adults. You can closely observe large species like sturgeons, making it an engaging learning environment.
One of the most popular spots for kids is the interactive media experience zone. The joy of seeing their colored fish swim in the screen's tank provides a different kind of excitement. Adding their names makes the experience even more special.
Recently, there's another reason to revisit the aquarium.
A pair of adorable otters has made their debut. Their curious faces peeking out of the water and their playful swimming instantly capture attention. Kids find it hard to leave the glass enclosure, and adults often find themselves snapping photos. Observing these natural monuments and endangered wildlife so closely is quite meaningful.
Interestingly, the mascot of Chungju is the otter, and there are plans to introduce a capybara soon, which adds to the excitement.
After your visit, it's nice to relax at the café on the third floor. The large windows overlook the park, creating a spacious and relaxing atmosphere. An elevator is available, making it easy for strollers and wheelchairs.
I also recommend taking a stroll along the nearby Neungam Wetland Ecological Park path. You can enjoy a peaceful walk amidst changing seasonal landscapes, seamlessly transitioning from indoor exhibits to outdoor nature experiences.
With the extended free admission, the new otters, the freshwater ecological exhibitions reflecting local characteristics, and the café and walking paths, why not take a light outing to the Chungju Aquarium in North Chungcheong Province this March to meet the otters with your kids?
