Exploring the Book Workshop and North Art Center in Gongju

The sky is clear, and the air is hot, signaling the arrival of summer.
Today, I visited the Gongju Book Workshop North Art Center, a place that is close by but I have never been to.
Shall we explore what the Book Workshop North Art Center is and what exhibitions it has to offer?
Upon arriving at the destination, I noticed a long building on the first floor with event banners on the exterior.
There were announcements regarding permanent exhibitions and upcoming special exhibitions.
As I entered the building, I saw a bright yellow sign on the entrance window that prominently displayed information about the Book Workshop North Art Center.
The Book Workshop was founded in 2001 and showcases book-making machinery and tools, promoting and practicing book culture through publishing and documentation.
Before the advent of computers, various book-making machines and tools from the analog era can be experienced here, allowing visitors to vividly encounter the materiality of books and engage in creative thought.
In one hallway, there are various interactive experiences available, such as a goods workshop, stamp workbook, one-handed notebook workshop, foldable book workbook, and personalized writing using a typewriter.
By using social media, visitors can enjoy these experiences at a reduced cost.
The permanent exhibition is titled 'The Materiality of Books,' showcasing the various hidden aspects of a book's creation.
As you enter the exhibition hall, the left wall is filled with 'manuscript paper' on display, allowing visitors to appreciate the evolution of manuscript paper designs over time.
Following the manuscript paper, one wall displays 'comic manuscripts,' highlighting the historical significance of comics in Korean culture.
The exhibition also details the production process of a book, presented in a step-by-step manner.
Each step is accompanied by relevant tools and photographs, including several typewriters on display.
In the exhibition area, books for sale are also displayed, including several copies of 'Books on Making Good Books.'
After viewing the exhibition on the materiality of books, there is a special exhibition titled 'Small Sign Matches Seen Through Printing Technology.'
Matches, once a staple of our daily lives, played a significant role in advertising and commercial signage during times of scarcity.
The yellow wall on the way out features a timeline of the Book Workshop's activities from 2001 to 2026, celebrating its 25th anniversary.
I recommend visiting the Gongju Book Workshop North Art Center with children or elderly parents.
It would be a great experience to explore how books are made and engage in various activities together.
Visiting this weekend could be a delightful outing for families.
