The Legacy of Ahn Jung-geun: Unity is Independence

June is the month of national defense and remembrance.
To honor the noble sacrifices of our patriots,
I visited the Ahn Jung-geun special exhibition
at the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum.
The exhibition will run until July 5.
During this limited time, I hope to reflect on the values of peace that we enjoy today,
following in the footsteps of Ahn, who yearned for Korean independence and peace in the East.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Museum houses artifacts and materials
from prehistoric times to modern history.
It serves as a cultural space to easily and enjoyably understand history.
The exhibition features a prominent black-and-white photo of Ahn Jung-geun,
taken after he assassinated Ito Hirobumi at Harbin Station in 1909.
This special exhibition commemorates the 80th anniversary of liberation
and the 60th anniversary of Korea-Japan normalization,
highlighting Ahn's noble spirit and practical legacy for independence and peace.
The exhibition is divided into three parts:
Part 1: Independence from Imperialism and Subservience
Part 2: The Independence War and the Dream of Eastern Peace
Part 3: Mourning Japan and Liberation, and Today's Division
The exhibition provides a comprehensive view of the independence movement
from the time of the Korean Empire to the liberation after the Japan-Korea Treaty.
Among the artifacts on display are personal belongings of Ahn Jung-geun,
as well as a handwritten document by the patriot Han Yong-un.
This document reflects his thoughts during his imprisonment after the March 1st Movement in 1919.
Additionally, a handwritten poem by Kim Gu,
who emphasized the power of culture, is also featured.
The spirit of Ahn Jung-geun continues at the Ahn Jung-geun Peace Center,
which is set to open on September 19 after remodeling existing facilities.
This location is close to his hometown, enhancing its significance.
The center will feature permanent exhibits of Ahn's writings,
interactive content, and educational programs.
This weekend, I encourage you to visit the Gyeonggi Provincial Museum
to experience the spirit of patriotism through Ahn Jung-geun's special exhibition,
which ends on July 5.
