Hello!

Today, I would like to introduce you to the Geochang Museum.

Location: 2183 Sunam-ro, Geochang-eup, Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do

Opening Hours: November to February 09:00 - 17:00, March to October 09:00 - 18:00

(Closed on) January 1st, Mondays, Lunar New Year, Chuseok

The Geochang Museum was established in 1988, initiated by the late directors Choi Nam-sik and Kim Tae-soon, to preserve local cultural heritage. It was upgraded to 'Geochang Museum' in 1993, based on the collection of local cultural assets to protect against foreign invasions and social turmoil.

Upon entering the museum, you will feel the deep breath of ancient culture in a serene space. The ceiling features a dome symbolizing Geochang's beautiful natural environment and cultural heritage, while the floor showcases a tile map of Geochang, detailing various geographical information such as mountains, rivers, villages, and temples.

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the Jeongjangri and Imbulri relics and dolmens. Geochang was part of the Daegaya territory and became part of Silla in 562. However, it was under Baekje's control for about 20 years after King Uija's invasion in 642. Even after Baekje's fall in 660, the Baekje restoration forces fiercely resisted until Silla regained control in 663.

Geochang was strategically significant during the Three Kingdoms period. In 673, military fortifications at Gyeoryeol Mountain were reconstructed in preparation for war with the Tang Dynasty. Today, Gyeoryeol Mountain Fortress and Susungdae preserve these historical traces.

One of the museum's notable collections is the 'Daedongyeojido', a map from the Joseon Dynasty created by Kim Jeong-ho. This woodblock-printed map is a complete edition of 21 volumes and was donated to the Geochang Museum from the Mil Yang Park family in Geochang, designated as Gyeongsangnam-do Cultural Heritage No. 275.

Kim Jeong-ho is known for collecting and comparing various maps and geographical texts to create the Daedongyeojido. Although there are no records of his direct surveys, the map's accuracy raises questions, which I inquired about with a guide.

The map was meticulously crafted using local information, historical texts, and distance measuring techniques. The 'Gigiogo' cart, developed during King Sejong's reign, automatically marked distances as it traveled.

The Geochang region has a rich history, from the Samhan period to the Goryeo Dynasty, with artifacts like Gaya pottery, Goryeo celadon, and Joseon white porcelain providing insights into its historical flow.

The first floor features a folk life exhibition showcasing agricultural tools and daily life items used by ancestors. Visitors can observe traditional farming and lifestyles corresponding to each season.

The folk life room displays various artifacts from notable figures, including Lee Bo-heum and the Geumsungdaegun, along with videos introducing Geochang's history and culture, making it a place to feel the essence of Geochang.

The Geochang Museum offers educational value beyond a simple exhibition space, allowing visitors to learn about the wisdom of past lives. In anticipation of the 2026 Geochang Visit Year, I hope many will come to experience the importance of traditional culture and history firsthand.
