Gijisi Neighborhood Park, located in Songak-eup, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, is an urban healing park where you can leisurely enjoy walks in nature.
The spacious park features various walking trails and resting areas, making it an ideal spot for family outings or casual strolls. On the day I visited, the yellow Cornelian cherry blossoms were in full bloom, filling the air with the essence of spring.
✔ Two Entrances to the Park
Gijisi Neighborhood Park can be accessed through two main entrances.
✔ Gijisi Samgeori Entrance
From the direction of Gijisi Elementary School, you will find a playground and restrooms at the entrance. A little further up, there is a forest playground and a multipurpose square, perfect for family outings.
✔ Purujio Apartment Entrance
Approaching from the direction of Purujio Apartments requires climbing a slightly steep path, but there are restrooms and a dusting area at the entrance. Continuing up, you will find a barefoot walking trail and a resting spot.
✔ The 400-Year-Old Zelkova Tree and Traditional Noodle Ceremony
At the top of Gijisi Neighborhood Park, there is a large zelkova tree, approximately 400 years old, alongside the Noodle Shrine. A wish tower is stacked in front of the tree, creating a charming scene.
This location hosts the traditional folk belief ceremony known as the Noodle Shrine Ceremony, which is connected to Gijisi Tug-of-War.
The Noodle Shrine Ceremony is a ritual held at Noodle Peak, located east of Gijisi Market, aimed at warding off diseases and disasters while praying for a bountiful harvest.
During leap years, the grand ceremony is conducted in early March according to the lunar calendar, while in non-leap years, it takes place in early April.
In the spring of 2001, a new shrine named 'Guksujeong' was established here, enshrining the mountain deity and continuing the local tradition.
The ceremony is conducted in a joint ritual format that incorporates Confucianism, Buddhism, and Shamanism, starting with Confucian rites, followed by Buddhist and Shamanistic ceremonies.
✔ Forest Playground Loved by Children
A short walk from the entrance of Gijisi Elementary School leads to a forest playground where children can play in nature.
The forest playground is designed to be eco-friendly, allowing children to interact with the forest while playing. It features various play equipment such as zip lines, swings, and net climbing structures, making it an exciting space for kids to enjoy.
✔ Healthy Barefoot Walking Path
Gijisi Neighborhood Park also has a barefoot walking path where you can feel the natural ground beneath your feet. The path is lined with dirt trails, and there are foot washing stations and shoe racks for convenience.
✔ Scenic Overlook and Various Rest Areas
As you ascend into the park, a wide multipurpose square opens up. This area includes a firewood yard, grassy areas, and a seasonal flower garden, providing citizens with ample space to relax.
In the center of the park, there is a two-story observation deck offering a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery, making it a perfect spot to take a break during your walk.
✔ Year-Round Walking Trails
The walking trails around Gijisi Neighborhood Park are lined with various trees, including Ippeun trees, maple trees, cedar trees, and metasequoia trees. In spring and summer, you can enjoy lush greenery and floral scents, while in autumn, the beautiful foliage makes it a great walking path throughout the year.
Gijisi Neighborhood Park offers a delightful combination of nature walks, traditional culture, and a forest playground for children. If you're looking for a relaxing stroll and healing time in Dangjin, I highly recommend visiting!
