While famous tourist spots are great, there are times when you want to explore local areas. This is especially true when you wish to uncover hidden gems in well-known tourist cities in Jeollabuk-do.
Typically, local travels involve visiting traditional markets or libraries that provide a glimpse into the lives of local residents. However, the closest connection can often be found in nearby mountains or community parks.
Today, I visited a small mountain called Baesan and the adjacent Baesan Sports Park. This park is known as a popular spot for Iksan residents, offering a surprisingly nature-friendly atmosphere right in the heart of the city.
Upon arriving, I parked my car and began to explore the various areas of Baesan Sports Park. This large sports park, located at the base of Baesan, is a significant green space in Iksan. It features well-equipped facilities including a synthetic turf soccer field, futsal court, tennis courts, basketball courts, foot volleyball areas, and outdoor exercise equipment.
During my stroll, I discovered interesting art installations scattered throughout the park, which kept me engaged. Instead of a sterile, modern sports park, the presence of these artworks created a harmonious blend with nature, providing a sense of stability and comfort.
In the center of the sports park, there is an outdoor performance stage. While not widely known, it hosts lively performances that resonate with the local community. This aspect truly highlights the charm of local travel.
While a slightly lesser-known spot can be delightful, enjoying a pleasant afternoon to the tune of familiar music is what makes the experience worthwhile. Just savoring such moments can make today's local travel feel successful.
As mentioned earlier, Baesan and Baesan Sports Park are interconnected. Stepping out of the sports facilities leads directly to hiking trails that ascend Baesan.
At the trailhead, there are barefoot walking paths and clay pathways. The official hiking trail is marked by national point number signs.
Although the warm spring has passed, summer offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the most beautiful scenery of Baesan and Baesan Sports Park. You can reach the summit of Baesan in about 20 minutes, and exploring the surrounding walking paths takes just about an hour. Moreover, the dense trees provide shade along almost the entire trail.
On a bright day, surrounded by green trees and sunlight-filled paths, the experience is simply delightful. The trail leading up to Baesan embodies this feeling perfectly. Light clothing and comfortable sneakers are all you need, making even an umbrella feel cumbersome.
Sometimes, rather than visiting well-known tourist attractions, planning a local trip that allows you to feel closer to the area can be refreshing. Baesan and Baesan Sports Park play a significant role in Iksan's local travel scene.
Although the season of roses has passed, the rose clusters and walking paths throughout Baesan Sports Park remain impressive.
Given these conditions, it’s no surprise that Baesan Sports Park is one of the most beloved places for Iksan citizens. If I had arrived a bit earlier, I could have enjoyed the beautiful roses and the refreshing breeze.
