Buan Susungdang
This trip to watch the sunset over the West Sea turned into an unexpected adventure. Initially, I only planned to see the sunset at Jeokbyeokgang, but thanks to Susungdang, which I encountered along the way, the journey became much richer.
I later discovered that this road, known for its sunsets, actually holds an old legend.
Located on the Buan Byeonsan Walking Trail, Course 3, Susungdang is open year-round, with free parking available at the Jeokbyeokgang Sunset Road parking lot.
Byeonsanbando National Park is unique in South Korea as a peninsula national park where mountains and the sea coexist. With land covering 89% and sea 11% of its area, visitors can enjoy both mountainous terrain and coastal scenery.
The Jeokbyeokgang Sunset Road, which connects to Course 3 of the Byeonsan Walking Trail, is popular for leisurely walks and is easily accessible due to the free parking.
As you walk up the hill behind the parking lot, you'll reach Susungdang, where photo spots are scattered along the path, allowing you to capture beautiful moments. When you arrive at the entrance, you'll see a section where rough waters flow between the rocks—another great photo opportunity!
Susungdang is a shrine dedicated to the goddess Gaeyanghalmi, who oversees the Chilsan Sea. According to legend, she shared her eight daughters with different regions, keeping the youngest daughter here to manage the sea. The entrance features a cartoon-style explanation that adds to the interest.
Hearing stories of how she grew tall enough to walk on the sea and calm storms to protect fishermen helps explain why this shrine was built here.
Inside the shrine, there's a painting of Gaeyanghalmi with her eight daughters, including the youngest in her arms, which is worth noticing. After a moment of prayer, I moved on.
Interestingly, this location is also the backdrop for the story of the dutiful daughter Simcheong. The small island where Simcheong is said to have thrown herself, called Imsudo, is located between Gyeokpo Beach and Wido. Experiencing the real landscape that inspired a classic tale was quite unique, and knowing these stories beforehand can change how you perceive the scenery.
There is also a lookout point where you can stand on a blue platform and enjoy the view of the sea. I never imagined I could see the ocean after visiting the church, but I was able to take in the ocean view.
Jeokbyeokgang features a coastline of about 2 km with red cliffs and rocky formations, named for its beauty comparable to China's Red Cliffs. Walking this path at sunset allows you to fully appreciate its reputation as one of the top three sunset spots in the West Sea. Although I visited in the afternoon and missed the sunset, I was able to explore the area as the tide went out.
Geologically, Jeokbyeokgang is fascinating, with a unique structure mixing Precambrian schist, Mesozoic granite, and volcanic rock from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, allowing for various river terrains. I recommend checking the tide schedule and visiting this area.
Tips for Visiting Buan Susungdang and Byeonsan Walking Trail Course 3:
1. Visit during sunset for the best views of Jeokbyeokgang.
2. Wear comfortable shoes as you will need to walk uphill to reach Susungdang.
3. Familiarize yourself with the legend of Gaeyanghalmi for a richer experience.
4. There are several photo spots, and you can enjoy the view of the sea from the church.
5. There is a cluster of camphor trees next to Susungdang, which is nice to explore.
