Exploring the Scenic Naesujeon Observatory and Ulleung Bridge

Naesujeon Observatory Summit
It’s a wonderful season to visit the lush green Ulleungdo. Ulleungdo is not an easily accessible travel destination, and if you miss it, you may feel a sense of regret. The Naesujeon Observatory offers a breathtaking view of the open eastern sea.
Additionally, the newly opened Ulleung Bridge, which started operating last October, is conveniently located nearby, making it a great addition to your itinerary.
These two locations are close to each other, making it easy to visit both. They are also connected to the Haedam-gil Trail course 3, which provides excellent views of the eastern sea, including Jodong, Jukdo, and Gwaneumdo.
The first stop is the Naesujeon Observatory, named after a pioneer named Kim Naesu who cultivated fields here. This area was once known as 'Jeojeonpo' due to the clusters of paper mulberry trees that grew here.
The entrance to the Naesujeon Observatory requires a 20-minute hike up wooden stairs. There are places to borrow walking sticks along the way, but I recommend taking your time to enjoy the scenery.
The path narrows as you walk, flanked by camellias and pines. Walking through this tranquil tunnel of trees makes the journey feel like an adventure in itself.
The observatory is situated at an elevation of about 440 meters. Upon arrival, you’ll find a simple resting area with a wooden floor, but the panoramic view of the East Sea is truly spectacular. Below, you can see the charming Jodong Port and the islands of Jukdo and Gwaneumdo, along with the stunning coastal scenery leading to Seomok.
Naesujeon Observatory is also famous for its sunrise views, making it a popular spot for early morning visits. After sunset, the night view of Jodong Port and the lights from squid fishing boats create a magical atmosphere.
After exploring the observatory, I moved on to the nearby Ulleung Bridge. It’s a great spot to visit together with the observatory due to its short distance.
The bridge offers a unique experience as it sways slightly while you walk, providing a gentle thrill suitable for families, friends, and couples alike. From the bridge, you can see Jukdo and Gwaneumdo, as well as the native trees of Ulleungdo below.
Another charm of the Ulleung Bridge is that it connects to the Haedam-gil Trail course 3, allowing for a seamless experience of walking through nature.
For those wishing to immerse themselves in the lush greenery and the beautiful coastal views, visiting both the Naesujeon Observatory and the Ulleung Bridge is a must when traveling to Ulleungdo.
As Ulleungdo is known for its unpredictable weather, it’s advisable to check the weather conditions before your visit.
