Exploring the Night Walkway of Gangdong Beach in Ulsan
Recently, I visited Gangdong Beach in Ulsan's Buk-gu, a place I've seen frequently on social media.
I always thought of Gangdong Beach as a summer getaway, but it has transformed with the recent development of a coastal park.
During the day, it appears as a typical beach, but I've heard it changes into a magical world at night. So, I planned my visit to coincide with sunset.
From the moment I stepped onto the walkway, I was amazed by the transformation. Today, I want to share my honest review of the night walkway at Gangdong Coastal Park.

I drove and parked in a nearby public parking lot. Even though it was nighttime, parking was not difficult, and the walk to the entrance of the walkway was relatively short, making it easily accessible.
However, be aware that weekends during the summer peak season may attract many visitors.
Reasons to Visit at Night
I arrived at the walkway just before sunset, and the scenery was beautiful during that time. The sky was a mix of blue and orange, and the walkway lights began to turn on one by one.
This moment was personally the most atmospheric part of my visit. As I walked against the backdrop of the sunset, I noticed the atmosphere shift dramatically as darkness fell.
The gray path I saw during the day started to glow softly in deep blue hues. With each step, it felt like I was walking on stardust, reminiscent of the Milky Way.
Particularly, there were sections of the walkway adorned with star and moon patterns that seemed to reflect real constellations, making me stop and admire them.
The low lighting along the walkway guided the path naturally. It wasn't bright or flashy like electric lights, but that subtlety added to its charm.
Walking along the pathway, I noticed large daisy-shaped sculptures lit up on the grassy area. The white petals and yellow stamens shone softly in the dark, creating a perfect photo opportunity.
On the beach side, I could see people sitting in camping chairs and setting up tents, adding to the relaxed atmosphere of the night sea.
Across the walkway, the night view of buildings combined with the natural lighting created a unique landscape.
Another Photogenic Spot: Whale Plaza
At the end of the walkway, you will find Whale Plaza, a viewpoint shaped like a whale. It is known for sunrises and sunsets, but at night, it exudes a completely different charm.
While the photoluminescent stone walkway had a soft and dreamy atmosphere, Whale Plaza was vibrant and overwhelming with its dazzling lights.
The lights illuminated the structure from below, flowing along the curves, making it another landmark photo spot at Gangdong Beach.
Walking along the subtle, Milky Way-like path and arriving at the vibrant Whale Plaza felt like a story unfolding.
I highly recommend walking all the way to Whale Plaza instead of just turning back at the walkway.
Reasons It's Becoming a Running Hotspot
Interestingly, there were just as many runners as there were walkers. With running becoming popular, I noticed several running clubs jogging along the walkway.
Seeing groups of people in matching running gear indicates that this route has already gained popularity among runners.
Running alongside the sea on a path that glows like the Milky Way is undoubtedly appealing. While running during the day can be challenging due to the heat, the cool sea breeze at night makes it an excellent choice for summer evening runs.
The walkway is also in great condition.
With a mix of walkers, runners, and photographers, the area felt lively and vibrant.
What is Photoluminescent Stone?
Photoluminescent stone absorbs sunlight or light energy during the day and slowly releases it at night. This means it can create nighttime scenery without electrical wiring or lighting fixtures, saving energy and reducing maintenance costs.
Unlike standard lighting that requires electrical installations and can incur repair costs when broken, photoluminescent stone is efficient for long-term maintenance.
Additionally, it can incorporate directional signs or patterns, providing a practical function while being visually appealing.
As more tourism infrastructure is set to be built in the area, including a travel lounge, visitors will soon have a space to gather information and relax while enjoying the walkway.
Gangdong Beach is likely to become a complex tourist destination enjoyed as a beach during the day and a Milky Way walkway at night. There will be even more activities to enjoy in the future.
⚠️ Note: Some sections of the walkway may have low lighting at night, so wearing comfortable shoes and bringing a smartphone flashlight is recommended.
The night walkway at Gangdong Coastal Park exceeded my expectations in beauty. While it may be an ordinary beach during the day, at night, it showcases a different charm with its Milky Way-like path and vibrant Whale Plaza lights. I highly recommend it as a nighttime attraction in Ulsan.
Whether for walking or running, it's worth visiting at least once.
