Iksan Citizens' Historical Records Center
The Iksan Citizens' Records Center is not just a space for storing old materials; it serves as a cultural platform that records and revives the lives and memories of each citizen as well as the history of the city. Today, we explored the Iksan Citizens' Records Center, which embodies the modern and contemporary history of Iksan.
As you pass through the modern historical cultural street on Pyeongdong Road in Iksan, you will encounter a unique and old building. This building is the office of the 'Iksan Agricultural Water Association,' constructed in the 1920s during the Japanese occupation.
The Iksan Agricultural Water Association was established by Japanese landowners to manage agricultural water facilities and increase rice production. While it appeared to be an organization focused on agricultural infrastructure, it actually supported the Japanese exploitation of food resources.
After the liberation, this building was not demolished and has been used for various purposes. It has been preserved close to its original form over the years and has recently been reborn as the Iksan Citizens' Records Center, complete with exhibition capabilities.
True to its name, the Citizens' Records Center is an open facility where citizens can donate and participate in the recording process. Whether it’s an old family photo, a school graduation album, or everyday items, all contribute to the historical record of Iksan.
Recently, it received a presidential commendation for its achievements in promoting citizen-centered recording culture and establishing a local archive. This recognition is not just for the quantity of archived materials but also for the long-term commitment to a participatory recording culture and its contributions to local cultural development through cultural content.
The transformation of a building that could have been left abandoned into a modern exhibition space while maintaining its original form is truly appealing. This is why it is regarded as a prime example of cultural regeneration that preserves the memories of the city.
The phrase 'the revival of the exhibition hall' perfectly describes this space, where an old building has been given new life and returned to the citizens.
While memories fade over time, records preserve history. The Iksan Citizens' Records Center is an important cultural heritage of Iksan that records the lives of its citizens, revives old architecture, and continues the local identity as a living museum, expected to play a vital role in the future.
Additionally, the building housing the Iksan Citizens' Records Center is known as a major filming location for the movie 'Dongju.' The preserved atmosphere of modern architecture was used to depict the space during Yun Dong-ju's study in Japan, particularly scenes representing a boarding house in Kyoto.
Visitors can appreciate the interior space, which has been recreated to reflect that atmosphere. The center also features displays about the film 'Dongju,' its filming locations, and a viewing area.
Upon exiting the main building, you will find an auxiliary storage space. The staff are kindly positioned throughout the center to help visitors create enjoyable memories. There is also a small parking area available in front of the center.
We invite you to celebrate the recent presidential commendation of the Iksan Citizens' Historical Records Center while enjoying a fun historical journey.
