When you're unsure where to take your child on the weekend, the Anyangcheon Ecological Story Center in Anyang, Gyeonggi-do, offers a variety of exhibitions, hands-on experiences, and outdoor ecological observations all in one place.
The Anyangcheon Ecological Story Center is a space dedicated to exploring the ecology and environment of the Anyangcheon River, and admission to the exhibitions is free. It also runs various ecological education programs aimed at preschoolers and elementary school students, most of which have a participation fee of just 3,000 KRW. Notably, the center is located between the foothills of Waryong Mountain and the Anyangcheon River, allowing visitors to observe ecology in the exhibition hall and then step outside to directly observe nature in the adjacent river.
The two-story exhibition hall provides multiple ways to engage with the nature and ecology of Anyangcheon. Visitors can closely examine real fish swimming in aquariums, as well as samples of plants, insects, amphibians, reptiles, and birds. There are also various materials such as photographs, images, and books available. By exploring the stories of the four seasons and water, visitors can naturally understand the ecology of Anyangcheon.
Beyond just observing and reading, there are diverse hands-on experiences available. Activities like the "Submarine Sketchbook," where children can decorate creatures from Anyangcheon, and the "Wow! Realistic Playground" utilize multimedia to make ecological experiences more enjoyable. The 3D video room and "Yaho! Boat Exploration" offer storytelling experiences that allow visitors to explore Anyangcheon from the perspective of its inhabitants, providing a unique way to connect with nature.
Stepping outside the exhibition hall transforms Anyangcheon into a living ecological classroom. Visitors can observe various plants, insects, and birds in the river according to the season. On the day of my visit, I encountered several birds, including the great egret and cormorant, at the bird observation deck, along with flowers and trees in the vicinity.
For elementary school students, the "Anyangcheon Treasure Hunt" is a noteworthy program that has been designated as an excellent environmental education program by the Ministry of Environment for December 2025. This experiential program allows students in first grade and above to observe the river's ecology and its flora and fauna, taking place twice a month on Saturdays in April-May and September-October.
There are also various family-oriented programs available. The "Family Ecology Classroom" is designed for families with children aged five and older, while the "Little Fabre Classroom" allows children aged six to third grade to observe insects. In the summer, programs like "Night Insect Exploration" and "Summer Vacation Anyangcheon Exploration" are offered, and in winter, there are programs such as "Winter Vacation Migratory Bird Observation" and "Anyangcheon Mandarin Duck School." Creative workshops using natural materials are also available.
Most educational programs require prior reservation, so it's advisable to check the program schedule and application method before visiting.
The Anyangcheon Ecological Story Center also allows visitors to explore how the river has changed over time. Starting from Jiji Daegogae in Uiwang, Anyangcheon flows through Gunpo, Anyang, Gwangmyeong, and Seoul before joining the Han River. After experiencing pollution during industrialization, Anyangcheon began to recover its ecological environment in the 1990s due to citizen-led restoration activities and environmental improvement efforts.
At the exhibition, you can explore the changes in Anyangcheon and the return of its wildlife. After viewing the exhibits, taking a stroll around the actual river allows you to feel the changes in Anyangcheon more closely.
