While walking near the old downtown area of Ulsan Jung-gu, you will come across a quietly nestled temple known as Haenamsa.
Located on Gisangdae-gil in Bukjeong-dong, this urban temple is a welcoming space even for those without religious affiliations.
Adjacent to the temple is a cozy spot perfect for reading, making it an ideal place to spend some leisurely time.
Haenamsa is conveniently situated near the Ulsan Municipal Museum of Art, making it easy to find. There is also parking available at the entrance, so visiting by car is quite feasible.
The area is lush with trees, and visiting on a rainy day offers an even more picturesque view.
Haenamsa is famous for being a cultural space where visitors can enjoy coffee while reading books. It is part of the Tongdosa Temple, the headquarters of the 15th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.
This area was historically the administrative center during the Joseon Dynasty, housing the Dongheon of Ulsan Dohobu and other government offices.
Established in October 1911 as the 'Ulsan Buddhist Mission', it was renamed 'Haenamsa' in 1936. The temple has seen various developments, including the construction of the Jijangjeon Hall in 1999 and renovations to the main hall in 2003. It was designated as Ulsan's traditional temple No. 7 in April 1999.
During the Japanese colonial period, Haenamsa opened with the intention of providing relief to the people in need. Since then, various monks have continued their outreach activities, and the temple remains an active religious space hosting events like New Year gatherings.
The temple complex includes the Seolbeopbojeon, Jijangjeon, Beomjonggak, Yosa, and an attached practice hall.
Inside the Seolbeopbojeon, a stone statue of Jijang Bodhisattva attracts many Buddhist visitors. In December 2011, the 'Haenamsa Sinjungdo' was designated as Cultural Heritage Material No. 21 of Ulsan.
Although Haenamsa is not large, it is easy to stroll around and take in the sights. The verdant plants create a healing atmosphere even in the heart of the city.

As you explore the grounds, you'll notice a different ambiance next to the Jijangjeon—this is 'Cultural Space Haenam'.
Designed as a cultural outreach center in the city, it features a practice hall and a cultural space on the first and second floors, where visitors can enjoy cafes and performances.
Cultural Space Haenam operates from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM and is closed on Thursdays.
The first floor combines a library and a café, with an outdoor area that feels like a scenic café. The second floor serves as a refuge and communication space for music, movies, and lectures.
With private areas for reading, the space offers a perfect environment for book lovers. The view of the trees and the temple through the folding doors adds to the healing ambiance in the city.
