Participants gather at Namhansanseong on a Friday afternoon, leaving behind the bustling city. Despite the fatigue that a week can bring, their faces are filled with pleasant anticipation. This special time, where they set aside their busy routines to kick off the weekend early, is part of the Gyeonggi-do local travel project 'Liberation Week.'

The first session of the Namhansanseong Trail Running program, part of the weekly Gyeonggi local travel initiative 'Weekend in Gyeonggi,' began on August 28 at the Historical and Cultural Center. Before diving into the run, participants gathered to learn about the deep history of Namhansanseong.

The tour of the Historical and Cultural Center, accompanied by an informative guide, adds depth to the running experience. Understanding the significance of the fortress trail, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a history spanning 600 years, ignites a serious passion in the participants.

After a warm-up and a group photo, a professional coach explained the trail running techniques. Due to sudden rain, they transitioned to indoor stretching to prepare their bodies for a safe running experience.

Finally, the 5km trail running commenced. The course, which includes the North Gate (Jeonseungmun), West Gate (Uikmun), Suweojangdae, and South Gate (Jihwamun), features various terrains such as uphill, downhill, and dirt paths, making it ideal for running.

Participants, now equipped with practical knowledge on maintaining pace uphill and safely navigating downhill, felt lighter on their feet. The coaches guided them through the course, adjusting the pace and frequently allowing rest breaks, during which they shared interesting stories about the trees, plants, and insects of Namhansanseong, ensuring that even beginners could enjoy the run.

Despite being strangers, the participants became a team as they supported each other, reaching the highest point of Namhansanseong, Suweojangdae, without anyone giving up. The majestic sight of Suweojangdae amidst the rain and fog exuded a deep sense of history.

The run, though challenging with the rain making uphill sections tough, was refreshing as the cool rain helped cool down their sweat, while the serene views of the fortress served as a wonderful companion on the journey.

Upon returning to the starting point, participants engaged in cool-down stretching, slowly catching their breath. They shared warm encouragement and applause for completing the 5km run together.

This Namhansanseong Trail Running experience, which provides an escape from the mundane city life, will continue every Friday until September 18. The participation fee is a deposit of 10,000 KRW, which is fully refundable upon completing the content mission. If you want to gain knowledge of history, enjoy nature, and boost your health, consider signing up for this unique Liberation Week experience.
