This is a historical journey along the East Coast of Gyeongju following the story of King Munmu!
By visiting the Munmu Wang Maritime Museum, Igyeondae, and the tomb of King Munmu in succession, you can discover the story of King Munmu, the maritime history of Silla, and the breathtaking scenery of the East Sea.
King Munmu's Tomb
Location: 30-1 Bonggilli, Munmu-myeon, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Parking: Free parking is available at Munmu Wang Tomb parking lot.
The tomb of King Munmu, the 30th king of Silla who completed the unification of the Three Kingdoms, is located about 200 meters from the coast, submerged underwater and designated as a historic site.
According to the "Samguk Sagi," King Munmu expressed his wish to become a dragon of the sea after his death to protect his country, and his ashes were buried in the East Sea as per his will.
Following his father's wishes, King Sinmun completed the temple to honor him.
The tomb of King Munmu, situated in the middle of the sea, has a unique appearance compared to other royal tombs. While it may not be grand, it embodies the spirit of King Munmu, who wished to protect his country even in death, making it a great place to share stories with children.
After exploring the tomb, we headed to Igyeondae nearby.

Admission: Free
Igyeondae is a pavilion that overlooks the East Sea where the tomb of King Munmu is located.
From Igyeondae, you can enjoy the expansive view of the East Sea and see the large rock where King Munmu's tomb is situated. Observing the tomb from the pavilion gave us a different perspective.
It’s a nice spot to take a break while appreciating the beautiful scenery of Gyeongju's East Coast, feeling the sea breeze and capturing memorable photos.
Across from Igyeondae is the Munmu Wang Maritime Museum, where you can learn more about King Munmu and the maritime history of Silla.
The museum presents the story of King Munmu in an engaging and diverse manner, allowing visitors to explore why he left his will related to the sea and how Silla viewed and utilized the ocean.
It offers various exhibits and interactive content that make it interesting for children and teenagers, making it a perfect family travel destination.
As we explored the exhibits, sharing the tales of King Munmu, the stories of Silla's history and the sea naturally intertwined.
Visiting historical sites with kids can sometimes lead to a quick glance at artifacts, but the Munmu Wang Maritime Museum offers numerous attractions and interactive elements that capture children's interest.
With various media art and experience-based content prepared for children, visitors can learn about King Munmu's story through both observation and hands-on activities.
This trip allowed us to closely examine King Munmu's tomb from the beach, and then view it again from Igyeondae along with the East Sea. We also gained a deeper understanding of King Munmu's achievements and intentions through the exhibits and experiences at the museum.
The stories from these three locations flowed together, creating a more memorable journey.
