It was a summer evening as the sun lowered in the west.
The opening ceremony of the 2026 Ulsan Donggu Maritime Festival was taking place on a special stage at Ilsan Beach.
The sea breeze washed away the heat, bringing a salty and refreshing feeling. The ocean silently comforted the crowd packed on the sandy beach.
As I entered the beach, I found young people engaged in a dance competition. Each time the music played, their bodies leaped with rhythm.
Cheers and applause erupted from the audience outside the stage. The vibrant movements of youth against the sea backdrop heated up the summer evening.
At Daewangam Park, lights began to illuminate one by one. The blue sea of the day accepted the darkness, and the beach lights brightened Donggu.

People waiting for the festival, including families, couples, friends, and tourists, gathered in groups. Children ran towards the sea while adults kept their eyes on the stage.

This year marks the 18th edition of the Maritime Festival, which has now established itself as a representative maritime festival of Donggu. Since 2009, it has showcased the history and maritime culture of Donggu, a city known for shipbuilding.
Before the ceremony, a performance by the popular singer 'High Note' and a traditional drum performance from Niigata, Japan, took place. The music from a neighboring country sounded like a festival language on the seaside stage.
Every time the drumbeat resonated, it felt as if waves were rippling deep within the heart.
The opening ceremony was attended by many, including Donggu Mayor Cheon Gi-ok and Ulsan Maritime Festival Promotion Committee Chairman Ji Jong-chan. Ulsan Mayor Kim Sang-wook, Ulsan City Council Chair Lee Young-hae, and Ulsan Superintendent of Education Jo Yong-sik were also present.
Mayor Cheon Gi-ok's speech echoed, expressing hopes that this festival would be a meaningful time for residents and tourists to enjoy together, confirming the future potential of Donggu.
The stars of the day were the nameless citizens who came to the festival. The expressions of the citizens filling the front of the stage revealed their excitement for the awaited event.

We saw the lives of those who made the sea their home and those who built the boats. About 150 residents, including elementary students and foreign workers, took the stage.
The sight of foreign workers contributing to Donggu's present while working in a foreign land made it clear that we now live in a world where everyone coexists.
Thus, the name 'Maritime Festival' felt even more special. It was a place to reminisce about the memories of those who have lived with the sea and to dream of the future.
As performances by singers like Jeokwoo, Seongri, and Cheonrokdam unfolded, the audience's cheers shook the night sea. Each time the music ended, applause erupted, and the waves carried that sound across the sea.
Various events continued late into the night, and people remained in their seats. Despite the hot summer night, the sea breeze was still cool, and the lights captivated the eyes.
The sea, which fishermen from Bangojin looked upon, and the sea that shipyard workers gazed at while launching massive ships, was now viewed by children visiting the festival. Although it's the same sea, its meaning seemed to change with the times.
The unchanging fact is that dreaming by the sea continues. Some dreamed of a full catch, some dreamed of larger ships, and others dreamed of a tourism city for tomorrow.
The title of the performance 'We Are Full Sail' came to mind again. A night filled with laughter and song. In that moment of sharing applause on stage, Ilsan Beach was already full sail.
The waves came crashing against the night sea and then receded. It felt as if the sea embraced the people, dreaming once more of tomorrow's tides.
What remained on that summer night at Ilsan Beach was a festival created together by the people and the sea. It was a memory that would not easily fade away.
