Last weekend, I visited the 25th Ethnic Arts Festival held at the grassy yard of Gochang Changpo Garden.
Gochang Changpo Garden is a great place for a stroll, but on this day, it was even better with exhibitions, experiences, and performances to enjoy.
As I walked around the event area, I encountered various attractions scattered throughout the expansive grassy yard.
Unlike indoor events, it was nice to leisurely explore among the green grass and trees.
In the exhibition area, there were poetry and art exhibitions, as well as a photography showcase.
The artworks displayed on the grass created a unique atmosphere, distinct from typical galleries.
I paused in front of the poetry pieces to read them one by one, and perhaps because I was surrounded by nature, I found myself appreciating the works with a more relaxed mindset.
I also took my time to look at the art and photography pieces.
With the grass and trees serving as the backdrop, the exhibition pieces blended beautifully with nature.
It had a different charm compared to viewing artworks inside a gallery.
The experience area offered hands-on programs that allowed participation.
From mini traditional pole experiences to caricatures and mobile photo booths, there was a variety of activities available.
In the caricature area, visitors became models, and their likenesses were captured in drawings.
The mobile photo booth also provided a chance to take photos, allowing us to capture a day spent at the Ethnic Arts Festival.
The folk games included traditional activities like kicking a shuttlecock and jumping on a wooden board, making it enjoyable for families with children.
Beverages and bottled water were provided for the audience, along with paper hats to shield from the sun.
As an outdoor event, it felt like there were thoughtful preparations made for the audience's comfort.
With some time left before the performances, I rode a bicycle around Changpo Garden.
During my ride, I encountered blooming autumn flowers, including purple day lilies and yellow cosmos.
When it was time for the performances, I returned to the stage area, which had shade structures set up to shield us from the sun and heat, making it comfortable to watch.
The performances included acoustic guitar and singing, traditional dance, and various folk music, flowing one after another.
The acoustic guitar and singing performance by the Seodeok group was soothing and well-suited for the grassy yard.
The traditional dance by the dance research group blended beautifully with the green grass.
The energetic drumming performance by 'Nikang Naekang' lifted the atmosphere and was exhilarating.
As the performances continued, the unique excitement of our traditional arts became more palpable.
The Gochang Folk Music Group's performance filled the grassy yard with the sounds of various instruments.
The tightrope performance at the end of the day was truly impressive, as the performer maintained balance while executing various movements.
The sounds of traditional instruments like the haegeum and janggu resonated beautifully, enhancing the tension and excitement of the tightrope act.
The natural setting added to the overall charm of the performances, making it a fantastic experience.
The 25th Ethnic Arts Festival was a wonderful event featuring exhibitions, experiences, and stunning performances against the backdrop of Changpo Garden's autumn scenery.
Experiencing our traditional culture and beauty up close was truly delightful.
Especially encountering intangible cultural heritage like tightrope walking felt even more meaningful.
I hope our unique culture, filled with charm and excitement, continues to thrive in the future.
