Encountering the Traces of Loyalty at the End of a Quiet Country Road

On a hot day, I headed to a rural village in Cheong-an-myeon, Goesan-gun, North Chungcheong Province. I wasn't originally on my way to Jangdam Chungshingak, but I stumbled upon it while taking a walk around the area.

Designated as Cultural Heritage Material No. 73 of North Chungcheong Province, Chungshingak is a small pavilion located deep within a quiet village, making it easy to miss. I almost overlooked it due to the small sign, but finding the entrance brought me unexpected joy.

The path leading to Chungshingak was a narrow farm road. Farmers were working hard in the fields, and the lush green crops created a picturesque scene. As I cautiously walked along the narrow path, I finally came upon the modest yet neat structure of Chungshingak.

Jangdam Chungshingak was built to honor the loyalty of Jangdam, a figure from the late Joseon Dynasty. He played a significant role in suppressing a rebellion during the 1728 Im Yoon-jae Revolt, known as the Military Rebellion.

To commemorate his contributions, the government issued a decree, and descendants along with local residents built this pavilion to honor his legacy. Although it hasn't been preserved in its original form, efforts are being made to maintain the surrounding area for cultural heritage conservation.

Inside Chungshingak, there is a plaque and various Chinese characters. The building features a gabled roof with a wooden structure, surrounded by protective barriers.

During the Joseon Dynasty, if a loyal subject, filial son, or virtuous woman was recognized by the state, a memorial plaque or pavilion was erected at their home or village entrance to honor them and serve as an example for future generations. Jangdam Chungshingak is a prime example of this memorial culture of the Joseon era.

After exploring Chungshingak, I moved left and found a tomb dedicated to ancestors. The traces of time are evident in the burial mound and surrounding stone structures.

Goesan Chungshingak is a living historical site, still maintained by descendants today. The enduring presence of the tomb and pavilion quietly conveys stories of loyalty that have crossed centuries.

Although not large in scale, Jangdam Chungshingak is a valuable cultural heritage that helps us understand the memorial system of the Joseon Dynasty and the spirit of loyalty in rural communities. Taking the time to explore such hidden cultural treasures during a trip to Goesan can make the journey even more meaningful. I recommend it as a weekend travel destination.
