"How well do I know Dangjin, even though I live here?"
Sometimes, I find myself pondering this question.
There are many cultural heritage sites and tourist attractions in Dangjin that I have passed by but never truly explored.
Often, being close to these places has prevented me from appreciating them fully.
To deepen my understanding of Dangjin, I participated in a special day of exploration.
This was the fourth tour of the "2026 Dangjin Love History and Culture Exploration" program organized by the Dangjin Cultural Center.
On Saturday, September 19, we ventured through places where the history and culture of Dangjin come alive.
The fourth course included visits to the Hapdeok Water Museum, Hapdeok Reservoir, Sinri Holy Site, and Solmoe Holy Site.
At first glance, these locations might seem quiet and serious, like a typical historical exploration.
I felt a bit nervous before starting, wondering if there would be a lot of walking and if the stories would be too complex.
However, the experience turned out to be much more enjoyable than I expected, filled with moments of realization, such as "Ah! So that's why!"
What I found most fascinating was how each place connected to form a single narrative.
On that Saturday morning, we set off for Dangjin.
While I usually prefer a leisurely pace on weekend mornings, my steps felt lighter that day.
This was not an ordinary trip to a distant tourist spot; it was a journey to explore the very city we live in.
As a citizen of Dangjin, it was a day to finally get to know the city better.
The program's appeal was heightened by its free participation and family-friendly nature.
It was a great opportunity to learn the local history with children and for adults to see Dangjin from a new perspective.
I brought my camera along, excited to discover new facets of Dangjin.
Our first stop was Solmoe Holy Site, known as the birthplace of Korea's first priest, Father Kim Dae-geon.
As I walked through the area surrounded by pine trees, I felt a sense of calm wash over me.
Throughout the day, various stories connected in my mind, from the agricultural and water management history at the Hapdeok Water Museum to the lifestyle wisdom of our ancestors at Hapdeok Reservoir.
The historical narratives intertwined, demonstrating the rich heritage of the land of Dangjin.
Experiencing hands-on activities, like making lotus leaf rice and rice cakes from Hapdeok's rice, added to the enjoyment.
Learning history through sight, sound, and touch makes it much more memorable.
The local history became more approachable as we engaged all our senses.
As we explored the area, I realized that history is not just about beautiful landscapes but also the stories behind them.
The experience reminded me of the importance of understanding the historical significance of our surroundings.
The stories of the past give depth to our present, making them far from ordinary.
The day concluded with a deeper appreciation for Dangjin's history, and I left eager to learn more about the city.
This exploration was not just a journey through familiar places but a discovery of the hidden narratives of Dangjin.
I look forward to uncovering more stories in the future, as Dangjin is truly a fascinating city.
