Exploring Hwangsan Traditional Hanok Village
During my visit to the Geochang Susungdae International Theater Festival, I also stopped by the Hwangsan Traditional Hanok Village across the street.
Upon entering the village, I was greeted by old houses and stone walls, creating a feeling as if time had momentarily stopped.
At the entrance of Hwangsan Village, there is a large tree that protects the area, and a parking lot is conveniently available for visitors.
The Hwangsan Traditional Village is well-preserved, showcasing traditional Hanok architecture. Walking slowly along the village paths allows you to experience the charm of an old rural village.
One particularly impressive feature is the stone wall path that runs alongside the Hanok. The view of the tiled roofs beyond the low stone wall, combined with the blooming trumpet vine leaning against the wall, creates a picturesque scene.
Hwangsan Village, where the old houses are located, is the ancestral home of the Geochang Shin clan. After the scholar Shin Gwon (1501–1573) settled here, the village flourished significantly. The central house, known as 'Wonhakgoga,' was built in 1927 and consists of various traditional Hanok structures including the main house, love room, middle gate, and storage room.
Notably, the love room features decorative elements that reflect the economic power of the homeowner, providing an interesting glimpse into the scale and structure of the Hanok.
The old stone walls of Geochang Hwangsan Traditional Hanok Village have been designated as Registered Cultural Heritage No. 259, recognizing their historical value.
The headman's house is another location where you can observe the traditional living landscape of Hwangsan Village, and the combination of Hanok and stone walls is quite striking.
Rather than being a flashy tourist destination, the charm of Hwangsan Traditional Hanok Village lies in the opportunity to stroll slowly along the old village paths and encounter the essence of a bygone rural community.
Inside the Namjeongjae gate, you can also see the Dog Rock, which is clearly visible from the Susungdae suspension bridge. The white rock on the right side of the mountain resembles a dog with its paws together, as if pleading to its owner.
Visitors to Geochang Hwangsan Village should look for the Dog Rock located behind Namjeongjae.
Hwangsan Village is conveniently located near Susungdae, making it a great addition to your travel plans if you are visiting Susungdae.
Instead of rushing through like a typical tourist site, walking slowly along the stone wall path while admiring the rooftops, walls, and alley views is the best way to enjoy Hwangsan Village.
The orange trumpet vine is beautiful, but the yellow flowers seen in the photos are also growing beautifully over the Hanok walls. In the middle of the wall, a tiled vent shaped like a flower adds to the village's charm.
Near the parking lot, you can also see the Hwanggang House. This house was home to Shin Seong-jin (1752–1830) and is one of the representative houses in the Geochang Shin clan village.
Shin Seong-jin passed the state exam in the first year of King Jeongjo's reign and served in public office for over 40 years, including a position as the Left Chief of the Royal Secretariat.
If you are planning a trip to Geochang, be sure to visit Hwangsan Traditional Hanok Village and take a leisurely walk along the stone wall paths. It’s a perfect place to spend some relaxing time amidst the serene beauty of the old houses and stone walls.
