As the hot season arrives, trekking up steep mountains often feels daunting. However, there is a hidden gem in Yeongwol, Gangwon-do, where you can enjoy breathtaking landscapes without strenuous hiking.

After parking your car, a short walk along a well-maintained forest path leads you to a stunning view of a massive landform embraced by green waters. This is why travelers seeking a relaxing getaway flock to this healing course during the summer vacation season.

The Hanbando Geomorphology Observatory welcomes visitors free of charge, operating 24/7. You can visit early in the morning or enjoy the sunset without any hassle.

The path from the parking area to the observatory stretches about 800 meters with a gentle incline, featuring well-kept decks and low stairs, making it accessible for people of all ages. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to reach the observatory comfortably.

This location showcases a unique karst landscape formed over millions of years by the Pyeongchang River, which has eroded and sculpted the limestone terrain. Recognized for its geological significance, it is designated as part of the Gangwon Paleozoic National Geopark.

Recently, a smart parking system with automatic license plate recognition and unmanned payment has been implemented, allowing for smoother entry and exit even during busy summer times. The lush greenery and swollen river create a picturesque scene.

If the sun is too hot while you’re outdoors, consider visiting the nearby Hanbando Wetland Ecological Cultural Center. This two-story facility features a VR experience room, ecological education exhibition hall, and a rooftop garden, all free of charge.

The center operates from Tuesday to Sunday, 9 AM to 6 PM, except on Mondays. A 1.5 km trail connects the ecological center to the observatory, providing a natural walking route.

For a unique experience, you can also enjoy a traditional raft ride on the river near Seonam Village, which is popular among summer vacationers. The raft operates daily from 9 AM to 5:30 PM, but it closes for safety from December to February.

Visiting during summer allows you to create a fulfilling day that includes walking, exhibitions, and water activities.
