Discovering the Beauty of Freshwater Fish: Chungbuk Aquarium in Goesan

[Goesan Travel]
Must-Visit Places in Goesan County
The Chungbuk Aquarium, located in Goesan County, is a new landmark in the central region, creatively utilizing the local limitation of being 'a province without the sea.'
Since its opening in May 2024, it has gained immense popularity among family visitors with its unique exhibitions themed around freshwater fish and the remarkable benefit of free admission.
The aquarium is situated within the Chungbuk Fisheries Park in Daedeok-ri, Goesan-eup. One of its biggest advantages is the spacious parking area, which significantly reduces parking stress even during weekends.
The exterior of the building is modern and sleek, and upon entering, visitors are welcomed by a warm and sophisticated interior, rather than the typical coldness of public facilities. The massive aquarium in the lobby captivates visitors, making them question if this is indeed a free facility.
The first floor is themed 'The World of Freshwater Fish,' designed to showcase not only the fish but also the river ecosystems of Korea and the world's vast freshwater environments.
The highlight is the main tank, which holds about 350 tons of water. The sight of fish swimming energetically creates an immersive experience reminiscent of a river.
The 270-degree underwater tunnel that runs through the main tank is the most popular photo spot. Fish swimming overhead and beside visitors provide a magical experience for children and an enchanting atmosphere for adults.
Visitors can encounter massive freshwater fish from around the world, including the Amazon and Africa, leaving them in awe of their enormous size.
On the second floor, accessible by stairs or an elevator, there are more interactive and charming spaces featuring colorful tropical and ornamental fish.
While the first floor feels grand, the second floor offers the fun of observing beautiful fish up close, with regularly changing exhibitions providing new delights with each visit.
The aquaponics research center is an educationally valuable space where visitors can see how fish waste is used to grow plants, showcasing a sustainable farming method.
The Lake Park Hall is themed around the beautiful lakes and rivers of Chungbuk, and there is a photo studio available for taking commemorative pictures after the visit.
The aquarium is stroller-friendly and equipped with facilities like nursing rooms, making it very accommodating for families with infants.
Operating hours are from 10 AM to 5 PM (closed on Mondays), and visitors can enter directly without prior reservation by confirming their numbers at the on-site kiosk.
It is recommended to visit on weekday mornings or to arrive at opening time on weekends for a more relaxed experience. The average visit lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours.
The Chungbuk Aquarium dispels the prejudice that "free means poorly made." The health of the exhibited creatures is excellent, and the tank management and cleanliness are top-notch.
It offers a unique charm of freshwater fish, distinct from sea fish, and is especially a great place for children to learn about the importance of life and the environment.
