Baetti Shrine, nestled at the foot of the mountains in Jincheon, is a serene place adorned with vibrant autumn foliage. As I approached the entrance, the colors of the trees were breathtaking.

This shrine served as a refuge for Catholic believers during periods of persecution, allowing them to maintain their faith. Today, it stands as a pilgrimage site where visitors can walk quietly and rest.

The name 'Baetti' translates to 'pear tree ridge,' derived from the abundance of wild pear trees in the area.

The shrine originated from a community of believers who sought refuge in the mountains. This village, known as a 'Gyowoo Village,' was formed by faithful individuals hiding from persecution. The rugged terrain provided an ideal shelter for them.

Baetti Shrine is often referred to as Korea's Catacombs due to its historical significance during the persecution of Christians. The term 'Catacombs' refers to underground burial sites where early Christians gathered to avoid persecution, symbolizing their commitment to faith.

This site was home to Father Thomas Choi Yang-up's first parish and the original seminary of the Diocese of Joseon, intertwining the meanings of a community, a parish, a seminary, and the birthplace of martyrs in one location.

Inside the shrine, a large cathedral built of red bricks stands majestically, surrounded by mountains that enhance its beauty. A statue of the Virgin Mary is located nearby.

The courtyard in front of the cathedral features a yellow maple tree, providing a perfect resting spot for pilgrims. The stained glass windows depict the mountains and people, and when sunlight shines through, the colors become even more vivid.

Inside, long benches are arranged beneath a high triangular ceiling. A cross is displayed on the wall behind the altar, with lighting designed to focus attention on it. A portrait of Father Choi Yang-up is placed at the front, and as this space is for worship, visitors are encouraged to observe quietly.

The pilgrimage path follows a forest trail, leading to the graves of martyrs and the Way of the Cross. It is a peaceful route, ideal for reflection. The pilgrimage can be taken through various courses, allowing visitors to choose according to their time.

Near the entrance, there is a building that houses a café, an office, and a gift shop, providing a comfortable place to rest before or after the pilgrimage. The spacious parking lot in front of the cathedral is convenient for visitors, and parking is free. This place is not about flashy attractions but rather about the meaningful experience of walking and staying quietly.
