Bae Hyun-sung on 'The Judge': 'I'm Still Growing as an Actor'

“An actor is not about showing off but naturally expressing oneself.”
Actor Bae Hyun-sung (26) shared his sincere thoughts as he wrapped up the tvN drama 'The Judge'.
In an interview held at a cafe in Gangnam, Seoul, he said in a calm yet confident voice, "I'm not a complete actor yet, but I want to grow step by step."
"I want to be an actor who doesn't stand out too much, an actor who blends in naturally."
Bae Hyun-sung said, "When people watch my acting, rather than feeling like 'Bae Hyun-sung is acting,' I hope they feel the character itself." He emphasized, "A natural flow is more important than flashy expressions."
He continued, "I hope that those who like me will watch my acting and think, 'It's different this time,' or 'It's getting deeper and deeper,'" revealing his sincere passion for acting.
Marking his 7th year since debut, Bae Hyun-sung has steadily built his filmography.
Bae Hyun-sung debuted in 2018 with the tvN drama 'What's Wrong with Secretary Kim'.
Since then, he has appeared in major works such as MBC's 'Extraordinary You', tvN's 'Hospital Playlist' series, 'Our Blues', ENA's 'Gaus Electronics', JTBC's 'Miracle Brothers', tvN's 'Family by Choice', and Netflix's 'Gyeongseong Creature Season 2', steadily building his filmography.
Unlike other actors his age who focus on romance, he has solidified his position as a 'character actor' through a wide range of emotions and various genres.
In particular, the fact that he has never faced any acting controversies is considered his greatest strength: solid basic skills.
In 'The Judge', Bae Hyun-sung played Jo Phillip, a perfectionist judge.
Jo Phillip is an elite former judge who is thorough in law and principles.
However, he goes undercover as a part-time worker at a chicken restaurant and works with Shin Sajang (Han Suk-kyu) to resolve disputes.
Regarding his character, he said, "He is a model student who has never missed first place in school, but he is also a person with inner wounds." He added, "I enjoyed it because I had to express various emotions such as law, action, and romance."
"I find it much more interesting to learn about different areas than to play just one role.
Even on my days off, I practiced and studied, and I realized again that 'this is what I love to do'."
"Han Suk-kyu is the kind of adult I want to be like."
He also expressed his respect for Han Suk-kyu, with whom he worked.
"Throughout the filming, I felt like 'This is what a great adult is like.' There were many things to learn not only from his acting but also from his attitude on set and how he treated his juniors."
He also said, "I wasn't sure if I had grown as an actor through 'The Judge,' but I was grateful that many people around me said, 'You've become much more natural.'"
"Now I want to break away from 'gentle characters'."
Bae Hyun-sung is currently preparing for the movie 'Proxy Exam' as his next project.
He said, "Until now, I've played many kind and gentle roles, but this time I'll be playing a completely opposite character." He added, "I plan to show a completely different side of myself than in 'Gyeongseong Creature 2'."
He continued, "I also want to try strong and masculine roles like the Jungcheon character played by my close friend Park Seo-ham in 'Takryu'." He also revealed his ambition to try historical dramas.
"I want to remain an actor who is constantly growing, rather than a finished actor."
He said this as he finished the interview.
"I'm not finished yet.
But I like that. I have more to learn in the future, and that means I have more to show you."
His eyes were filled with ambition as a 'real actor'.
