The catalogue for the 13th Seoul Mediacity Biennale, Seance: Technology of the Spirit, which took place from August 26 to November 23, 2023, at the Seoul Museum of Art, Nakwon Instrument Arcade, Cinematheque Seoul Art Cinema, and Seoul Youth Arts Center, has been published.

This 650-page bilingual (Korean and English) catalogue contextualizes and expands upon the biennale's theme through vivid photographic documentation and insightful texts. It includes commissioned essays and interviews that reflect on the influence of marginalized belief systems on the development of modern and contemporary art, proposing an alternative to formalist, social, and materialist interpretations of art prevalent in our world.

Curated by Anton Vidokle, Hallie Ayres, and Lukas Brasiskis, the biennale explores the entanglement of art and spiritual practice from the dawn of modernity to the present, connecting the mystics and mediums who prefigured the emergence of modern and abstract art to contemporary artists from around the world. Eleven newly commissioned texts reflect on the influence of marginalized belief systems on the development of modern and contemporary art, collectively proposing an alternative to the prevailing formalist, social, or materialist accounts.
