Mujinjeong, located in Ham-an, is a historical pavilion designated as Cultural Heritage No. 158 in Gyeongsangnam-do. It was built by the Joseon scholar Jo Sam, who dedicated it to educating future generations and spending his later years. Named after his pen name, Mujinjeong showcases the elegance of early Joseon pavilion architecture with its simple, unadorned tiled roof and wooden floor.
As summer deepens, the lush greenery becomes more vibrant, adorned by the bright flowers of the 'Baengnoknamu,' commonly known as the crepe myrtle. From mid-July, these flowers bloom for 100 days, adding charm to the serene beauty of Mujinjeong.
Upon ascending the hill to the pavilion past the Geunjeongmun gate, you can feel a sense of calm washing over you. The stone bridge and arched stone walkway over the pond blend harmoniously with the surrounding ancient trees, providing a refreshing atmosphere. Observing the koi fish in the pond adds to the enjoyment of your visit.
The rustic earthen walls and tiled roofs draped with crepe myrtle bask in the July sunlight, showcasing a lovely pink hue. I visited on the late afternoon of July 21, and the flowers were about 30% in bloom, with full bloom expected by mid-August for an even more beautiful scene.
Looking through the door frame of Mujinjeong, the view of the wall and trees creates a perfect natural frame. The sight of Geunjeongmun framed by crepe myrtle flowers will likely become a beautiful photo spot in August when the flowers are in full bloom.
From late July to August, the crepe myrtle flowers will be at their most vibrant. Visiting early in the morning or around sunset will allow you to capture the soft and beautiful reflections of the flowers and pavilion in the pond.
One cannot mention Mujinjeong without mentioning the Ham-an Nakwa Festival. Held annually on Buddha's Birthday at the Mujinjeong pond, this intangible cultural heritage features a traditional ritual where oak charcoal is lit to create dazzling sparks, warding off evil spirits.
While the summer crepe myrtle colors the pond in pink, the spring Nakwa Festival enchants with its charcoal flower fireworks, gaining national fame. Although this year's festival has already concluded, I look forward to next year. I recommend visiting during the peak of the crepe myrtle bloom in August to enjoy the beauty of the day.
