Exploring the Enchanting Gubyeongsan Mountain in Summer
There is a mountain where a cool breeze blows even in the height of summer. I visited Gubyeongsan in Boeun, Chungbuk, to find the mysterious wind holes hidden in the mist.
Many hesitate to hike in the summer due to the heat, but Gubyeongsan offered a different charm.
Thanks to the rain that fell the day before, the forest was a vibrant green, and the mist enveloped the mountain, creating a dreamy atmosphere.
Although the view from the summit was obscured, it was a day to truly appreciate the serene beauty of a summer mountain.
Gubyeongsan (876.3m) is located at the southern end of Sobaeksan, named after its majestic nine peaks.
The section connecting to Sobaeksan is designated as the 'Chungbuk Alps' due to its beautiful rock formations and ridges.
While driving on the highway, the grand mountain range caught my eye, and it had long been a mountain I wanted to climb.
I took the first course starting from the Gubyeongri village hall.
Since the village is a residential area, it's best to avoid parking there.
Instead, I parked at the nearby Myeonghaemok Shrine parking lot, which made it easy to prepare for the hike with restrooms available.
As I began the hike, light raindrops were still falling.
The valley water flowed vigorously due to the previous day's rain, filling the forest with a fresh earthy scent.
Despite being summer, the temperature was mild, making it comfortable to walk, but the high humidity quickly made me breathless on the initial ascent.
Although sweat gathered on my forehead, the refreshing greenery of the rain-soaked forest made my steps feel lighter.
The trailhead sign indicated that the summit of Gubyeongsan was 2.1 km away.
While it may seem short, the continuous uphill and steep sections made the actual distance feel much longer.
Especially after the rain, some areas were slippery, so it was wise to take slow, careful steps.
The initial trail was a mix of dirt paths and leaf-covered trails.
The rain had made parts of the trail damp, creating slippery spots, but the forest appeared even more vibrant as a result.
The green grass covered the ground, and the forest path visible through the mist created an otherworldly atmosphere.
Personally, this section was the most memorable part of the hike.
After climbing for a while, I reached the wooden stair section, where the incline steepened significantly.
The long staircase took my breath away, but the well-maintained trail made it manageable to ascend slowly.
Pausing occasionally to catch my breath and inhale the cool forest air helped me regain my strength.
The most anticipated spot on Gubyeongsan was the wind holes.
There are four wind holes here, known for blowing cold air in summer and warm air in winter.
One of the three major wind holes in South Korea, I truly felt a refreshing breeze when the wind blew.
Even in the height of summer, this area was cool enough to make me feel refreshed.
As I neared the summit, the ridge path continued, but the thick fog prevented me from seeing the views I had hoped for.
Still, the cool breeze made me feel more refreshed than tired.
You don't always encounter the planned scenery in the mountains, but the atmosphere created by the day's weather is another cherished memory.
The final stretch included a short rocky climb and steep wooden stairs.
While not dangerous, I moved cautiously due to the wet conditions.
Finally, I reached the summit of Gubyeongsan in Boeun.
The summit stone was smaller than I expected, and the dead pine tree at the top seemed to symbolize Gubyeongsan.
Normally, this spot offers a panoramic view of Boeun Plain and the refreshing mountain ranges, but the fog obscured everything that day.
Although it was a bit disappointing, the sense of achievement from reaching the summit was exhilarating.
The most significant realization from this summer hike on Gubyeongsan was that a hike doesn't have to offer the best views to be enjoyable.
Walking along the misty forest trail, feeling the cool breeze at the wind holes, and experiencing the intensified scent of the forest after the rain provided a freshness that couldn't be felt on a clear day. Therefore, Gubyeongsan was a satisfying choice for a summer hike.
After rain, trails can be slippery, so wearing hiking shoes with good traction is much safer.
The wind holes provide a noticeably cooler sensation, making it a great place to take a break, so don't rush past them and be sure to enjoy the refreshing breeze.
Since the summit view is crucial, choosing a clear day will allow for a more spectacular view of Boeun Plain and the Chungbuk Alps ridge.
Though the anticipated scenery was left for another time due to the fog, the freshness of the forest and the cool breeze from the wind holes made for a memorable hike.
Gubyeongsan seems to showcase different charms in every season, and I hope to experience the summit views again under clear skies next time.
