Light Tunnel Park: A Unique Urban Oasis in Namyangju

[By Choi Byeong-yong]
Located near the city center of Namyangju, Light Tunnel Park is a remarkable space that has transformed a neglected urban area into an artistic haven of light. After the completion of the Central Line double-tracking project in 2007, the area was left in darkness, but Namyangju City revitalized it through a large-scale urban regeneration project, creating Korea's first tunnel-type LED media art complex.
Visitors escaping the summer heat find themselves in awe as they step into the tunnel. The sweltering heat outside vanishes, replaced by a cool, refreshing breeze that feels like entering a naturally air-conditioned cave.
The cheerful characters, Kkuku and Naknak, brighten the atmosphere as they showcase vibrant content accompanied by lively music. With changing background visuals at every step, visitors are never bored and can capture stunning photos from any angle.
The 250-meter-long tunnel reveals a fantastic world of light. The entire ceiling and walls transform into massive LED screens, displaying high-definition immersive media art that flows throughout the tunnel.
Themed around the vast universe, media art featuring planets like Mars, Venus, and Earth rises among shining stars, evoking a breathtaking experience akin to traveling through a galaxy tunnel.
The tunnel also creates an illusion of walking through a gigantic aquarium. The sight of large whales and various fish swimming along the walls provides a mystical experience for visitors of all ages.
Sharks, rays, and colorful coral reefs swimming gracefully create a special moment for citizens, adding a unique pause to their daily lives.
The previously dark space has transformed into a lively underwater exploration site, enhancing the joy of urban strolls through the integration of technology and art.
While the vibrant light art captivates visitors, there are also barefoot reflexology paths for those seeking health benefits, attracting many locals.
Currently, a pedestrian bridge installation project is underway, aiming for completion in early October 2026. Once finished, it is expected to become an even more wonderful healing space where families and couples can stroll hand in hand.
Light Tunnel Park, once a dark, abandoned tunnel, has returned to the community adorned in light. This weekend, why not take a walk through this unique tunnel path where historical significance meets modern aesthetics and enjoy a refreshing and special experience?
