June: A Month of Remembrance and History

As we welcome June, the early heat of summer arrives alongside the lush greenery following the warm spring.
However, as conveyed through the title and images, June is not merely the beginning of early summer; it is also the 'Month of National Defense and Honor,' a time to commemorate the noble sacrifices of those who willingly gave their lives for the country.
Particularly, June 1st is designated as 'Righteous Army Day,' a meaningful occasion to reflect on the historical significance of the righteous armies that rose voluntarily during national crises and to inherit and develop their spirit of patriotism for the unity and development of the nation.
The nameless heroes who rose with the sole intention of protecting their families, communities, and country are remembered here at Gibang Mountain Fortress.
The Gibang Mountain Fortress Righteous Army Historical Park is located in Buk-gu, Ulsan, where beautiful scenery coexists with a heartwarming history.
Shall we embark on a journey to this meaningful site together?
Upon entering the Gibang Mountain Fortress Righteous Army Historical Park, a grand monument made of natural stones immediately captures our attention.
It stands proudly on a stone embankment, symbolizing 'Giryung,' which means 'the ridge where the flag stands.'
This ridge, where Gibang Mountain Fortress is located, has historically been a crucial transportation hub and a significant military site.
During the Imjin War in 1592, many scholars and citizens from Ulsan gathered here at Gibang Mountain Fortress, driven by a single thought of saving the nation, raising the flag of the righteous army with determination.
Standing before this magnificent monument at such a historically significant site evokes vivid imagery of the righteous army's passionate cries and fluttering flags from 400 years ago.
The Gibang Mountain Fortress Righteous Army Historical Park is situated at 483 Maegok-ro, Buk-gu, Ulsan.
In Buk-gu, Ulsan, where the park is located, numerous attractions boasting natural beauty await discovery, from the beautiful Gangdong Mongdol Beach to the refreshing cypress forest bathing area and the stunning silver grass waves of Muryongsan.
It is truly a place that could captivate visitors for an entire day.
Situated at the foot of Dongdaesan, the Gibang Mountain Fortress Righteous Army Historical Park transcends a mere historical exhibition hall, offering a perfect cultural space where visitors can enjoy sweet relaxation amidst lush nature while taking in the panoramic views of Ulsan.
Upon entering the building of the Gibang Mountain Fortress Righteous Army Historical Park, visitors are first drawn to the café space that highlights the structural charm of the building.
"I definitely entered through the entrance, but is this the second floor?" Yes, that's correct! This unique structure was built to adapt to the terrain of the mountain, creating an interesting experience where what feels like the first floor is actually the second.
Before or after exploring the park, there is no better place to take a moment to relax and find peace of mind.
While the flags of the park are impressive, my personal recommendation is the rooftop observation deck on the third floor, which offers breathtaking views of the Ulsan cityscape.
From this open rooftop, the majestic ridges of Dongdaesan and the city of Ulsan unfold like a panorama.
It's a fantastic spot for capturing stunning photos, so don't forget to take some memorable shots here.
After enjoying the cool breeze on the rooftop, it's time to descend for a deeper historical journey.
Although located on the first floor, the exhibition hall creates a solemn atmosphere reminiscent of entering the underground secret base of the righteous army, where we confront the true spirit and noble essence of our people.
The first corner of the exhibition hall highlights the history of the righteous army, focusing on the civilians who took up arms during national crises.
Righteous armies refer to civilian soldiers who rose voluntarily to fight without waiting for government orders or punishment when the nation faced foreign invasions.
From the Three Kingdoms period through the Goryeo era's struggles against the Mongols, the Imjin War, and the resistance movements during the late Joseon period, the righteous army has been our unique DNA for overcoming crises.
The exhibition hall details the noble footprints of the people who wielded swords and spears instead of sickles and hoes.
The main focus of the exhibition hall is the righteous army during the Imjin War.
In 1592, as the Japanese forces invaded and weakened Busanjin and Dongnae Fortress, Ulsan faced a dire historical crisis.
Even the government forces collapsed, but the scholars, farmers, and commoners of Ulsan transcended social classes to gather at Gibang Mountain Fortress, determined to protect their homeland.
This struggle of the Ulsan righteous army continued for an astonishing seven years.
Despite lacking formal military training, they utilized guerrilla tactics to block the supply routes of the Japanese army and achieved remarkable victories in numerous battles.
The exhibition also introduces key historical sites related to the Ulsan righteous army during the Imjin War.
From Gibang Mountain Fortress to Ulsan Waeseong, where fierce battles took place, and to Seosengpo Waeseong, a crucial stronghold of the Japanese forces that faced persistent resistance from the righteous army, the remnants of history remain throughout Ulsan.
The highlight of the exhibition hall is the corner dedicated to the Gibang Mountain Fortress righteous army.
Their bravery in facing elite Japanese soldiers with inadequate weapons resonates deeply with us today.
Ultimately, history does not become severed.
It shows how the spirit of the Ulsan righteous army during the Imjin War continued into the independence movements during the Japanese occupation.
When you leave the exhibition hall with a warm heart, a lush outdoor space blends harmoniously with the forest.
Looking at the red flags reminds us once again that the peace and daily life we enjoy today have not been given to us for free.
There is a saying that a nation that forgets its history has no future.
On June 1st, Righteous Army Day, and during the Month of National Defense and Honor, why not visit the Gibang Mountain Fortress Righteous Army Historical Park with your children or loved ones?
It is because of the noble sacrifices of the Ulsan righteous army that the beautiful Ulsan exists today. I highly recommend taking a meaningful time to honor and remember their great spirit at the Gibang Mountain Fortress Righteous Army Historical Park.
