Gyeonggi Climate Insurance: A Safety Net Against Heat Waves

As summer heat continues,
temperatures have already risen
to around 28 to 34 degrees Celsius.
The early onset of heat has raised concerns
about health risks from heat waves.
In response to the ongoing heat,
Gyeonggi Province has launched
the nation’s first ‘Gyeonggi Climate Insurance’ program,
where 14.4 million residents are automatically enrolled
without any separate procedures.
This program provides financial support
for health damages caused by heat waves
and climate disasters.
The insurance premium is fully covered by Gyeonggi Province,
ensuring that all registered residents
are automatically enrolled without application.
With the increase in heat wave days,
outdoor workers, the elderly, pregnant women,
and those with chronic illnesses
are at greater risk of heat-related illnesses.
This year, the Gyeonggi Climate Insurance
has enhanced its heat wave response coverage.
In addition to the existing diagnosis fee for heat illnesses,
new benefits include emergency room visit fees
and compensation for deaths related to climate disasters.
The coverage details include:
✔ Heat illness diagnosis fee: 150,000 KRW (once a year)
✔ Emergency room visit fee for climate disasters: 100,000 KRW (per incident)
✔ Compensation for climate disaster incidents: 300,000 KRW (per incident)
✔ Death compensation: 3,000,000 KRW
✔ Infectious disease diagnosis fee: 200,000 KRW (per incident)
Residents diagnosed with heat illnesses
or utilizing emergency services due to climate disasters
can apply for insurance benefits.
Vulnerable groups, such as those receiving home health care
and pregnant women, can receive additional coverage
if hospitalized for heat illnesses,
with up to 100,000 KRW per day for a maximum of 5 days.
For outpatient treatment of heat illnesses,
2,000 KRW per visit is available,
up to 5 times a year.
Insurance claims can be made within 3 years
from the date of the incident or diagnosis.
Documents needed include:
Claim form, diagnosis certificate (or opinion letter),
resident registration certificate, bank account copy, etc.
Claims can also be conveniently submitted via KakaoTalk
by adding the 'Gyeonggi Climate Insurance' channel.
This year, the Gyeonggi Climate Insurance
will operate until April 10, 2027.
In a time when heat waves are becoming commonplace
due to climate change,
Gyeonggi Climate Insurance serves as a safety net
to protect residents' health.
Gyeonggi residents are automatically covered,
so remember this program for assistance during heat-related incidents.
