Finding Relief from the Summer Heat in Ulsan

The current weather shows a peak daytime temperature exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, signaling the onset of early summer heat.
This summer is expected to be hotter than usual, which is already causing some concern.
While searching for a place to cool off, I discovered the Heat Relief Centers.
Here’s how to find them:
- Visit the National Disaster Safety Portal and select "Safe Areas" to find Heat Relief Centers in your region.
- Use the "Safety Step" app to check Heat Relief Centers based on your current location.
- Check local community centers, senior centers, welfare centers, and affiliated banks.
Today, I visited a Heat Relief Center located in Ulsan's Ulju County.
The Onyang Administrative Welfare Center is quite large, spanning three floors, possibly due to the area's population.
Its location near Namchang Station on the Donghae Line makes it easy to find and accessible on foot.
This center also serves as an evacuation site during disasters, equipped with public Wi-Fi, a spacious parking lot, and an automated external defibrillator.
There is a sign indicating that a high-tech emergency bell system is operational in the safe civil service office.
The center's three floors provide ample space compared to other administrative welfare centers.
On the stairs, there are instructions for safe stair walking, making it a good opportunity to exercise while cooling off.
The civil service office is well-equipped with seating available throughout, likely due to its designation as a Heat Relief Center.
It has cool air conditioning and various health and convenience facilities.
Visitors can measure their blood pressure for free, and wheelchairs are available for those with mobility issues.
There is also an unmanned civil service window, with no fees for using it.
Ulsan City operates a voucher taxi service for seniors aged 80 and above, expanding from the previous age of 85 starting February 2026.
Seniors over 70 can use a transportation card for free bus rides in Ulsan.
For those needing quick charging, there are rapid chargers for electric wheelchairs and scooters available.
The Onyang Small Library is also located on the first floor, providing a quiet place to read and cool off.
If visiting in person is difficult due to children, consider using the Ulju County welfare chatbot for inquiries related to child welfare.
Remember to avoid outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours and use public transportation for longer distances to protect your health.
Ulsan City also offers free umbrella rentals from June to September to help reduce heat exposure.
In addition, from July 1 to July 30, free water play areas will be available at various parks during weekends and certain weekdays.
Although the weather is hot, I hope everyone has a safe and cool summer in 2026.
