Exploring the Scenic Beauty of Ulsan's Sudo Island

Hello! I am Heo Eun-sun, a blogger for Ulsan City.
With the arrival of June, marking the start of summer, I would like to introduce you to the refreshing and expansive sea travel destination of Ulsan.
Sudo Island, located in Bangojin, Ulsan, is a small rocky island featuring a lighthouse. It is renowned for its stunning scenery and is a popular spot for photographers to capture sunrises and sunsets.
The name 'Sudo' comes from the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks, resembling the sound of a geomungo, a traditional Korean string instrument. During the summer, the cool breezes provide a perfect escape from the heat, making it an ideal spot to visit.
The coastal walking path that connects Sudo Island, Sudo Art, and Daewangam offers beautiful scenery throughout the seasons. This route, known as the Sudo Coastal Path, is not far and is easy to walk, making it a charming way to enjoy the romance of Ulsan's sea.
Today, I will share my experience exploring this route, excluding Daewangam Park. You can enjoy the entire course or just a portion of it, as it is an attractive seaside destination.
At the entrance of Sudo, there is a spacious public parking lot, making it convenient for those driving. The path leading to the island is well-maintained, allowing for a comfortable walk.
In the distance, you can see the lighthouse, with a sculpture of a ghost whale positioned in front of it. The atmosphere around this sculpture changes with the weather, providing different vibes.
While admiring the massive ghost whale sculpture of Bangudae Petroglyphs, it's also nice to take a moment to appreciate the sea of Ulsan.
In June, hydrangeas bloom modestly around the lighthouse, adding to the charm. While more hydrangeas would be lovely, the lack of shade makes it hard for them to thrive, but a few can be found blooming near the entrance.
Visiting Sudo in June gives a unique feeling, especially at sunset. If you wish to enjoy the gradual setting of the sun, it's advisable to bring a warm coat, as it can get chilly in the evening due to the strong winds.
The view from Sudo offers a glimpse of Bangojin, where you can see Shasta daisies blooming in spring and pampas grass in fall.
To the right, Sudo Art can be seen, where you can experience the simple daily life of the fishing village of Seongkkut. Continuing along the path leads you to the coastal trail heading to Daewangam.
Sudo Art hosts various exhibitions, making it a worthwhile stop if you are visiting Bangojin. Admission is free, allowing you to enjoy the artworks without any burden.
The exterior of the building displays banners of current exhibitions, so you can check what’s on display before your visit.
Sudo Art operates from 10 AM to 6 PM and is closed on Mondays, January 1st, and during the Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays.
Currently, the first floor features an exhibition by artist Jang Hana, which runs until the 28th of June. There are also experience programs for children associated with the exhibition, so if you're visiting with kids, it’s worth looking into.
Jang Hana's exhibition, titled "Embrace," conveys warmth and love through comforting illustrations.
The exhibition continues on the second floor, where Lee Min-hee's work, "Blooming Blue Light," showcases impressive pieces depicting the sea and fireworks.
If you visit Sudo Art, don't forget to take some memorable photos with the beautiful backdrop of Ulsan's sea.
The coastal path leading to Daewangam features occasional blooms of golden daisies. In spring, the area is adorned with vibrant yellow rapeseed flowers, rivaling Jeju Island's beauty.
Although the flowers had mostly wilted, the golden daisies offered a comforting sight.
Be sure to capture your journey along the Sudo Coastal Path, creating memories against the stunning backdrop of Ulsan's sea.
The refreshing coastal walking path is a highlight. If you enjoy walking, exploring all the way to Daewangam will surely enhance your experience of Ulsan's beautiful sea.
In June, the Bangojin sea welcomes you with the scent of golden daisies and the salty sea breeze. The Sudo Coastal Path, filled with sights and exhibitions, is incredibly appealing.
Even in June, the cool breeze makes it pleasant for a walk.
At the entrance of Sudo, there is a public parking lot at Bangojin Port, which is convenient for visiting Sudo Art and the fishing village.
Weekends can get crowded, so you may need to find alternative parking nearby.
The public parking lot allows for two hours of free parking on weekdays and one hour on weekends and holidays.
