On a sunny day, I visited the historic site of Goryeodong in Hamann, where the breath of history can be felt at every step. This place was where Lee O, a loyal subject of Goryeo, built walls to remain a servant of Goryeo even after its fall and the rise of Joseon.

Thanks to the parking lot at the entrance of Goryeodong, it was convenient to park my car and take a leisurely stroll.

The first thing that caught my eye was the protective tree that stands strong over the village. The grandeur of this centuries-old tree seems to represent the long years of endurance this place has witnessed.

Goryeodong is a site where traditional hanok houses and old homes are relatively well-preserved, making the entire village feel like a historical space.

Lee O symbolically planted a Zami flower within the walls to signify that this land belonged to Goryeo. He declined the salary offered by the Joseon king and maintained his livelihood by farming.

Beyond the low stone walls, the tiled roofs may not be extravagant, but they exude the refined dignity of a scholar.

It would be nice to capture the village scenery reflected in the mirrors placed throughout the area.

The low stone walls with tiled roofs, wooden gates, and the hanok structure with a maru (veranda) are quite impressive. Some buildings have separate quarters, giving a glimpse into the life of the yangban (nobility) during the Joseon era.

Walking around the hanok buildings felt like stepping into a time machine, transporting me back to the past. The polished floor of the daecheongmaru (main room) was well-maintained, and sitting there, the view of the courtyard calmed my mind.

The sight of the traditional furnace with a cauldron and old furniture inside the room offers a glimpse into the lives of people from that time. The worn old books and sturdy wooden furniture indicate that this place is still a cherished home and heritage for someone.

At the entrance, there is an information board explaining the Goryeodong and Toegye Road, along with a beautiful 11-course route in Hamann. The map clearly shows the entire route, including the length and estimated time, making it easy for first-time visitors to explore.

Although my visit focused on a short course centered around Goryeodong, I hope to walk the entire Toegye Road on my next visit.

While Goryeodong may not be overflowing with flashy attractions, it is an excellent place for quiet contemplation, reflecting on the weight of the walls built to uphold the beliefs of a family that has persisted for over 600 years.

It serves as a living history lesson for children and a perfect healing course for adults to temporarily escape the noise of daily life.
