The Story of the Pine Tree Guarding the Hidden Travel Destination of Dangsong Village in Geochang

Today, I would like to introduce a hidden travel destination in Geochang,
located in Dangsang-ri, Wicheon-myeon, Geochang County, Gyeongsangnam-do.
This is the Dangsong of Dangsang-ri.
With its beautiful appearance and deep historical value,
this ancient tree is a representative of our country.
Having protected the village for many years,
it is not merely a natural object,
but a symbol of the region and an object of faith.
✅️ Basic Information
✔️ Designation: Natural Monument No. 410
✔️ Location: 541 Dangsang-ri, Wicheon-myeon, Geochang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do
✔️ Species: Pine (Korean Red Pine)
✔️ Age: Approximately 600 years
✔️ Height: About 18 meters, Circumference: About 4 meters
The base of the tree shows axe marks,
and despite the southern branch being broken,
the branches spread evenly in all directions,
creating an impressive shape resembling a giant umbrella.
Additionally, the tree bark is cracked like a turtle's back,
and the base bears the marks of time.
The name Dangsong comes from the pine tree that guards the village's deity,
'Dangsang.'
Every year, during the first full moon of the lunar calendar,
the villagers gather to hold a ritual,
praying for peace and abundance.
On the day I visited,
traces of the ritual held during the full moon were still present.
According to legend, this tree made sounds before significant events in the country,
and it was also called 'Yeongsong.'
Especially during the loss of national sovereignty in 1910,
liberation in 1945, and the Korean War in 1950,
it is said to have cried out at night for months beforehand,
adding a mystical feeling to the place.
Around the tree, protective measures and resting areas have been established,
making it a pleasant spot to linger.
Dangsong in Dangsang-ri is located in a quiet village,
allowing visitors to experience a serene atmosphere.
Nearby attractions include Susungdae, Guyeon Seowon, and the Forest Leisure Park.
The village entrance parking lot is spacious,
and restroom facilities are well-equipped for convenience.
I highly recommend visiting this precious natural heritage
to experience the deep history and vitality of nature in Geochang.
