Today’s weather shows that it’s May, and the temperature is 30 degrees Celsius.

It makes me wonder, 'Is this early summer?'

On hot days like today, I’d like to introduce a cool indoor space in Ulsan.

✅ How to Get There

Taehwa River Cavepia is located in Nam-gu, Ulsan.

You can take bus number 716 or 744 from Taehwa River Station and get off at , then walk for about 3 minutes to arrive.

If you are at the Industrial Tower, take bus number 513.

✅ Taehwa River Cavepia

The cave is much longer than you might expect, so make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

This place is an experiential space created from an artificial cave built during the Japanese occupation. It is said that in 1942, during World War II, the Japanese military converted the Ulsan airfield into a military base in preparation for wartime.

To store military supplies like rations and aviation fuel, several artificial caves were created around the mountains in the Daehyeon-dong area of Ulsan.

There were four Namsan caves located about 500 meters apart from the entrance of Clover Apartments to Namsan Temple. All of them have a structure where you can return without penetrating the mountain. Three of them have different entrances and exits, while one has the same for both.

The Namsan cave, which has opened as Taehwa River Cavepia, is divided into:

  • 1st Cave: Historical experience space showcasing life in Ulsan during the Japanese occupation, forced labor, and the history of exploitation related to Samsan Airfield.
  • 2nd Cave: Adventure space.
  • 3rd Cave: Sketch aquarium space.
  • 4th Cave: Event space.

The caves are illuminated, creating a sparkling atmosphere. Even indoors, the lighting makes for beautiful photos!

Feel free to take pictures while you walk!

You can also experience cave exploration. Safety goggles are provided, so you can wear them during the experience.

There is an unmanned café and experiential space as well. Since walking can make your legs tired, take a short break.

Enjoy a cup of coffee in the cave—it's available from a vending machine, and the menu is displayed with pictures for easy selection.

✅ Insect Specimen Exhibition

Insect specimens are also on display. These are dried specimens made from actual insects, allowing for detailed observation unlike live insects.

There’s also an experiential zone. Adults might wonder, 'How do I touch them?' but kids don’t seem scared at all.

✅ Animals Living in the Cave

There are exhibits of animals that live in caves, including bat specimens.

Bats are nocturnal and start their activities at dusk, searching for food throughout the night. Some eat fruit, while others consume small insects.

Bats can change the frequency and interval of their ultrasonic sounds depending on whether they are detecting food, attacking, or capturing prey. Isn’t that fascinating?

Most caves used as tourist attractions are equipped with lighting or themed experiential spaces based on local specialties.

Ulsan's Taehwa River Cavepia features media art with a sea theme. Entering the underground, you feel like you’ve entered the deep sea.

When you exit, you must return the safety helmet you wore from the entrance.

Taehwa River Cavepia is closed every Monday and during the Lunar New Year/Chuseok holidays, so keep this in mind!

The Korea Meteorological Administration's '3-Month Outlook (June-August)' predicts that this summer will maintain higher temperatures than usual.

If you’re looking for a cool indoor spot in Ulsan on a hot day, I highly recommend visiting!

I hope you enjoy a refreshing experience filled with sparkling lights at Taehwa River Cavepia.
