There was a time when we used to share a creaky wooden desk with a partner. The murals reflect those days when we all wore the same design uniform and had short hairstyles, and if we didn’t wear our name tags, we would get scolded.
Jangsaengpo, known for whaling, captures the life intertwined with whales in its murals.
Before whaling was banned in 1986, the people of Jangsaengpo lived centered around whales. At that time, over 50 whaling boats supplied more than 60% of the whale meat distributed in the country.
You can still see villagers enjoying whale meat today. In the Jangsaengpo Cultural District, you can taste whale meat dishes, including 'Whale Table,' a representative food of Ulsan's Nam-gu, where whale meat is served in the main dish and bibimbap.
As you walk through the alley, you will come across various whales, beautifully painted as murals.
Whales are categorized and utilized based on their body parts. The main products derived from whales include whale meat, whale oil, and baleen. Whales are so large that they provide ample resources for various uses.
The first umbrellas were made from whale bones, baleen was used for corsets and springs, and ambergris, a byproduct of sperm whales, was used as a fragrance.
Even the ground features designs of whales from Jangsaengpo. Jangsaeng, the character symbolizing whales, can be seen throughout Ulsan's Nam-gu.
You can also find murals depicting the underwater world where whales live.
While the exact etymology of the word 'whale' is unknown today, it is believed to have originated from 'the entrance where water spouts from a valley.'
The most famous record related to whales in Korea is the Bangudae Petroglyphs, dating back to the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age, which is a national treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As you continue to admire the murals while walking, you will discover the charming small alleys of Ulsan's Nam-gu.
Walking along the mural path feels like walking under the sea, making it as fun as finding your way through a maze.
Not only whales but also various fish are depicted throughout the area.
Jangsaengpo, with its colorful whale murals, offers a delightful experience as the village story path continues, allowing you to appreciate a wonderful world of whales.
The old walls adorned with murals create a vibrant atmosphere, and each visit feels like the murals are becoming more complete.
A highlight of the Memory Alley is the mural featuring the comic book 'Treasure Island' with Dooly the Little Dinosaur. Dooly, who came to live with a small-town man named Ko Gil-dong, is a character from a comic that ran in the magazine from 1983 for ten years.
The comic, which has become a nostalgic memory of the 1980s and 90s, is well represented in the murals, making the name 'Memory Alley' very fitting.
The world of murals scattered throughout the alley, from the whales that symbolize Jangsaengpo to the Memory Alley, offers a variety of sights. If you visit the Jangsaengpo Cultural District in Ulsan's Nam-gu, embark on a mural exploration!
