Exploring the Beauty of Gyeokpo Beach in Buan

One of the three major beaches on the west coast, Gyeokpo Beach in Buan is a must-visit destination as the season for longing for the sea has arrived. Located in Jeonbuk, Gyeokpo Beach is one of the first places that comes to mind when thinking of the ocean in the region, and after visiting, it’s clear why it’s so popular.
Gyeokpo Beach is situated in Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeonbuk, and is recognized as one of the three major beaches on the west coast alongside Daecheon Beach and Mallipo Beach. Its location at the western tip of the Byeonsan Peninsula provides an unobstructed view of the expansive West Sea, which is its greatest charm.
Upon arriving at the beach and facing the sea, I felt a sense of clarity wash over my busy mind. The West Sea stretching beyond the horizon offered pure openness, and simply gazing at the sea while feeling the ocean breeze was a healing experience in itself.
Although the sandy beach is about 500 meters long, it has excellent conditions for swimming. The tidal range is minimal, the water is shallow, and the slope is gentle, making it perfect for families with children to enjoy water activities without worry.
The water was impressively clear and clean, almost making me question if it was the West Sea. The sparkling, transparent water under the sunlight created a picturesque scene that kept drawing me to take photos. It’s no surprise that Gyeokpo Beach was selected as one of the top 20 clean beaches by the Korea Tourism Organization in 2016.
Another unique feature of Gyeokpo Beach is the nearby Chaeseokgang Cliff, formed by the sea's erosion over many years. If you time your visit with the low tide, you can walk along the beach to Chaeseokgang, which offers a stunning view. Checking the tide schedule beforehand can enhance your experience.
Behind the beach, a dense pine forest provides a refreshing shade, allowing visitors to relax comfortably even on sunny days. This creates a natural flow from the sandy beach to pleasant walks in the forest.
The sunset at Gyeokpo Beach is renowned for its beauty, often considered the best among the scenic spots of Byeonsan. The sunset paints the entire sea red beyond the islands in the West Sea, creating an unforgettable view. I recommend visiting in the evening to enjoy the sunset as well.
In terms of facilities, Gyeokpo Beach has well-equipped amenities, including restrooms, showers, cooking areas, and camping sites. Nearby, there are seafood restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets, and various accommodations like resorts and pensions, making it a great spot for an overnight stay.
For those living in Jeonbuk, it’s an easily accessible day trip. Since it’s a popular destination, arriving early during peak season is advisable for parking and securing a spot on the beach.
