Exploring Osan Jukmireung Peace Park: A Tribute to Sacrifice and Peace

June is the month of national defense and veterans' affairs.
Every June, we remember the noble sacrifices of those who
laid down their lives for our country.
In Gyeonggi Province, there are various memorial facilities
that help us grasp the meaning of national defense and veterans' affairs.
One such place is the Osan Jukmireung Peace Park.
Let's take a closer look.
What is Osan Jukmireung Peace Park?
At Osan Jukmireung Peace Park, you can pick up a pamphlet at the information desk.
According to the pamphlet, the park is a historical site
where the U.S. 24th Division's 21st Regiment, known as
the Smith Task Force, was the first to be deployed
during the Korean War in June 1950.
They engaged in fierce battles against North Korean forces.
On July 5, 1950, only 540 members of the Smith Task Force
fought valiantly for 6 hours and 15 minutes
against the advancing North Korean 4th Division.
Although they had to retreat due to overwhelming odds,
this battle delayed the North Korean advance
and provided crucial time for the South Korean and UN forces
to establish a defensive line along the Nakdong River.
Osan City commemorates this sacrifice
and, in 2020, transformed the area into a complex peace culture space.
The park is thoughtfully organized to help visitors
experience and remember these historical facts.
There are two main exhibition halls and various outdoor displays.
In the outdoor plaza in front of the UN Forces Memorial Hall,
large tanks, military aircraft, and artillery used during the Korean War
are displayed, capturing visitors' attention.
During this month of national defense and veterans' affairs,
we saw kindergarten children visiting with curious eyes,
holding hands and taking pictures with their teachers.
The once fierce battleground is now a place
where future generations can learn about peace.
After briefly exploring the outdoor exhibits,
I first visited the UN Forces Memorial Hall.
This hall showcases the background and progression of the Jukmireung battle
and the noble sacrifices of the Smith Task Force members
through various artifacts, videos, and dioramas.
The wall filled with golden nameplates
memorializes the 540 soldiers who participated in the battle.
In the experience hall, visitors can engage in a unique virtual experience
that allows them to see through the eyes of the Smith Task Force members.
From the moment they took off from Japan's Itazuke base
to their arrival in Busan and journey to Osan,
the experience vividly conveys the hardships of war.
In the park, you can also find the new UN Forces Memorial
and the original memorial built in 1955.
Standing before these memorials, I reflected on the sacrifices
made for freedom in a foreign land.
The park also features a striking symbolic sculpture
that represents the resolve and sacrifices of participating nations.
As I walked through the park, I was reminded of the heroes
who led the Smith Task Force, including Colonel Charles B. Smith.
Their names are etched in history, a testament to their bravery.
As a former army officer, visiting this park was a meaningful experience
that conveyed the pain of war and the value of peace.
If you are planning a meaningful outing with family or friends this June,
I highly recommend visiting Osan Jukmireung Peace Park.
