As the daytime temperatures rise, many seek summer retreats. While valleys and beaches are popular summer destinations, forest recreation areas should not be overlooked. Jeonbuk is home to several recreation forests, and among them, I would like to introduce Jeonbuk Hyangrosan Natural Recreation Forest, where you can enjoy thrilling monorail rides and water activities.

Located in Osan-ri, Muju-eup, Muju-gun, Jeonbuk Hyangrosan Natural Recreation Forest offers not only accommodation but also a forest market, an artificial waterfall, a monorail, and an outdoor swimming pool, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and activities.

First, let me introduce the accommodation facilities. The building shown in the photo is the Galaxy Light Lodge, which is situated at the bottom of the area and consists of units. All rooms are the same, accommodating up to six people with a standard capacity of four. Another unit, the Green Light Lodge, has rooms for 10 and 20 people, making it ideal for group stays.

As you ascend along the forest paths, you will find the Tree House, a cozy retreat named after trees like maple, yew, persimmon, and ginkgo. This standalone accommodation is suitable for two, with a maximum capacity of four, though the interior is somewhat compact.

The view from the terrace of the Tree House offers a breathtaking landscape. Waking up to such scenery, surrounded by lush green mountains, is truly refreshing.

Further up, you will encounter another type of tree house, also a standalone unit equipped with a TV, refrigerator, air conditioner, electric rice cooker, cooking utensils, and a hairdryer.

Next is the Forest Cave House, designed with lava caves, marine erosion caves, ice caves, and limestone caves, featuring bunk beds inside. This cave house accommodates four people, with a maximum capacity of six.

Above the cave house, there is a quaint resting area with a small terrace. Although the cave house does not offer an open view, climbing the hill provides a stunning panorama.

Reservations for accommodation can be made through the Forest Experience program, but due to its popularity as a summer retreat, booking can be competitive.

The forest also has a campsite where you can enjoy camping. You can set up tents on clean decks, with facilities like sinks, toilets, and showers available. Camping reservations can also be made through the Forest Experience program.

One of the exciting activities available at Jeonbuk Hyangrosan Natural Recreation Forest is the monorail. Tickets can be purchased at the forest market before boarding the monorail.

The monorail fare is 5,000 won for adults, 4,000 won for teenagers and military personnel, and 3,000 won for children, while children under 36 months can ride for free.

- Ticketing hours: 10:00 AM - 11:50 AM / 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM

- Operating hours: 10:10 AM - 12:00 PM / 2:10 PM - 4:40 PM

- Operating days: Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays

During weekdays, only group reservations are accepted, but this may change during peak season, so please check in advance if you plan to visit on a weekday.

At the monorail boarding area, a cute monorail awaits you. The Jeonbuk Hyangrosan monorail features a 1.5 km long track that ascends and descends through beautiful natural scenery.

While riding the monorail, you can enjoy the natural landscapes and feel the energy of the forest. Children often wave at each other as they encounter other monorails, creating joyful memories together.

Upon reaching the summit, a path leads to the Hyangrobong Observatory, but unfortunately, construction is ongoing, and access to the observatory is currently unavailable. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of November 2026, so the observatory will be accessible after that date.

There is a pond with a waterwheel, surrounded by a grassy area that provides a lovely resting spot. An artificial waterfall is also present, which is not yet operational but will be active during the summer. Lights are installed near the waterfall, allowing for a beautiful view at night.

The recreation forest also features a swimming pool. Although not large, the pool has shallow and deep areas, along with a slide for added fun. During my visit, the pool was not yet open, but the staff was busy cleaning in preparation for the opening.

◆ Swimming Pool Operation Schedule

- Dates: July 1 - August 23

- Hours: 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM

- Admission fee: 5,000 won for adults and children

- Ticketing location: Forest Market (next to the swimming pool)

- Showers & changing rooms: 2nd floor of the swimming pool building

- Outside food is prohibited (except for water, fruits, baby food, and products from the forest's restaurant and café)

- Swimwear that holds water is not allowed.

- Children under 120 cm must wear life jackets.

In addition to the activities mentioned, Jeonbuk Hyangrosan Natural Recreation Forest offers wine therapy experiences and pottery classes. There are also cafes and restaurants available for dining.

Jeonbuk Hyangrosan Natural Recreation Forest is a great summer retreat where you can ride the thrilling monorail through the forest and enjoy water activities to beat the summer heat.
