The story of insects through expert commentary and sensory experiences.

Children are curious about even the smallest insects they discover, wondering what they are called, where they live, and what they eat. Observing live insects allows them to examine their appearance and movements in detail, beyond what books or photographs can show.

I participated in an insect docent tour at the Insect Resource Center of the Gyeonggi Agricultural Technology Institute. This family program allows participants to observe various creatures while listening to explanations from insect guides, and even engage in activities like crafting and collecting.

As the tour begins, participants wear necklaces and join the program with the insect guide. The guide not only identifies the insects but also explains their appearance, habitats, and diets in a way that resonates with children's curiosity.

One of the highlights for the children was the opportunity to closely observe and touch live insects. For example, as they learned about the characteristics of common insects like mantises and crickets, they noticed new details they usually overlooked. They also learned how to distinguish between male and female insects.

One of the creatures that particularly fascinated the children was the African clawed frog. They eagerly examined its appearance and watched it eat, showing great interest and curiosity.

During the tour, there was also a chance to learn about edible insects. Participants observed and tasted them, discovering how insects can be a food resource. Initially hesitant, the children gradually tried the samples, embracing the new experience. It was an eye-opening moment to learn that insects can be utilized in various ways, not just as subjects of observation.

Hands-on activities followed, where participants crafted beetles using wooden pieces. This activity allowed them to reconstruct the insects they had closely observed, keeping them engaged and interested.

In the latter part of the tour, children searched for insects hidden in sawdust. They carefully examined the sawdust, and when a caterpillar emerged, their focus intensified. This experience deepened their understanding of the natural habitats of insects, moving beyond simply viewing them from a distance.

By the end of the experience, even those who were initially hesitant to touch the insects had become more comfortable, guided by the instructor. They could see the insects' movements, sizes, and leg structures up close, which was a different experience from viewing photos or models.

At the conclusion of the tour, participants were allowed to take home a caterpillar they had collected. It was impressive that they could continue observing the caterpillar's life and transformation at home, rather than just finishing the experience on-site.

The insect docent tour at the Gyeonggi Agricultural Technology Institute offers a multifaceted experience, including expert explanations, live insect observations, edible insect tastings, crafting, and caterpillar collection. The tours will run until November 6, 2026. If you're interested in participating, check the schedule and availability on the Gyeonggi Insect Festival blog. This will be a unique opportunity for you and your child to learn about insects through seeing, hearing, and touching.
