Experience the Enchantment of Ulsan's Moonlight Concert
Every year around this time, a special concert is held as part of the Hyanggyo Seowon National Heritage Utilization Project.
This year, the 'Ulsan Moonlight Pungnyu 26' will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 7 PM.
Set in the tranquil atmosphere of the Hyanggyo, with soft moonlight and a beautiful blend of traditional Korean music and classical performances, this event offers a unique stage that is hard to find elsewhere.
This is my third visit, and I continue to be captivated by its charm. Every year, it brings a different emotional experience, making it a prominent summer cultural event in Ulsan that I eagerly look forward to.
Located at 117 Myeongnyun-ro, Jung-gu, Ulsan Hyanggyo is mostly surrounded by residential parking zones. Moreover, there is a bus stop right in front of the Hyanggyo, making public transportation more convenient than driving.
With several routes, including the circular bus number 21, accessing the venue is quite easy. If you plan to attend a performance or event, I recommend using public transport whenever possible.
Upon climbing the stairs, visitors can register in the guestbook with the assistance of staff and receive a commemorative gift—a shopping basket—along with the day's program information.
Every time I visit the Ulsan Moonlight Pungnyu, I appreciate the practical souvenirs provided, which can be useful in daily life!
Since the event is held outdoors, there are concerns about mosquitoes. The organizers have thoughtfully provided various mosquito repellents, including sprays, patches, and bracelets, ensuring that attendees can focus solely on the performance.
Refreshing lemon tea, coffee, and barley tea were available to help cool down the summer heat. Even though I had dinner beforehand, I enjoyed a glass of cool lemon tea while soaking in the event's atmosphere.
The main performance begins at 7 PM, but various experience booths open at 6 PM, allowing attendees to make the most of their waiting time.
My family explored the experience booths before the show started, participating in various programs. While it may seem like a children's activity, many programs were enjoyable for adults as well.
Especially on this day, my mother joined in on the activities, making it a joyful experience for everyone. It felt like a representative summer cultural event in Ulsan that families can enjoy together.
The Ulsan Hyanggyo pop-up card making experience was meaningful, allowing us to learn about the various spaces within the Hyanggyo.
We also made cute whale keychains using discarded fishing nets and plastics, an upcycling experience that emphasized the importance of environmental conservation. The completed whale keychain became a small but special souvenir.
Additionally, we decorated transparent water bottles with stickers and drawings, creating our unique bottles. Both kids and adults enjoyed customizing their bottles according to their tastes.
We also experienced the charm of traditional crafts, such as the Gontak and Takbon techniques, where we rubbed ink onto thin paper to create beautiful patterns. It was fascinating to see the beauty of our traditional methods come to life in our hands.
Lastly, making Hanji lanterns by writing wishes on them was one of the most delightful experiences for my child. As they carefully wrote their wishes, they expressed their hopes to their mother, hoping for them to come true.
The completed Hanji lanterns illuminated the night during the concert, adding to the beauty of the Hyanggyo under the moonlight. The performance felt even more special, surrounded by the shimmering Hanji lanterns.
Throughout the event, there were additional delights, such as the Gapyung pine nut candy prepared by the staff, making for a tasty snack.
The performance opened with a presentation from participants of the Gukyo Village Pungnyu Bang, showcasing the talents of local residents rather than professional performers, which added to its significance.
Familiar pop songs blended with the traditional sounds of the gayageum, creating a unique emotional experience. The delicate yet profound sound of the gayageum captivated the audience with a charm distinct from the original songs.
The second stage featured the traditional Korean music group 'Ippeul,' allowing us to fully appreciate the depth and beauty of our traditional music.
Familiar tunes like 'Gunbataryeong' and 'Sukdaemeori' had the audience humming along, fully immersed in the performance. Traditional music may seem daunting or unfamiliar, but the combination of well-known pieces and beautiful sounds made it accessible for everyone.
The event also included diverse performances spanning classical, opera, and pop music, offering a new level of enjoyment. On a hot July night, the moonlight and music at Ulsan Hyanggyo provided a refreshing pause from daily life.
'Ulsan Moonlight Pungnyu 26' allowed us to experience our culture firsthand while enjoying beautiful music under the moonlight. It was a valuable experience that demonstrated that our traditional culture is not distant or difficult but rather something everyone can enjoy together.
I look forward to more diverse programs in Ulsan's beautiful cultural spaces where citizens can enjoy and create memories together.
