The '2026 Traveling Digital Exhibition on Dokdo' Experience

The Traveling Digital Exhibition on Dokdo took place at the Suwon Youth Culture Center / Inside the Dokdo Digital Exhibition

Have you ever set foot on Dokdo?

I haven't. 😅

Visiting Dokdo depends on weather conditions,

so you need a bit of luck.

It's said that you need to accumulate virtue over three generations to be able to visit,

making it a challenging place to access.

However, since Dokdo has come all the way to Suwon,

I went to meet Dokdo directly.

It is the '2026 Traveling Digital Exhibition on Dokdo.'

Organized by Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Future Generation Foundation,

and in collaboration with the Suwon Youth and Young Adult Foundation,

this exhibition was especially meaningful as it coincided with June, the month of national defense and veterans.

True to its title as a digital exhibition,

it was filled with experiential content incorporating various digital technologies like VR, AI, and interactive media.

The Dokdo Digital Exhibition was divided into a lobby area on the first floor and an interior space.

The first thing that caught my eye was the 360° Touch VR Experience of Dokdo.

By tapping on the desired point on the screen,

the scenery unfolds in 360 degrees with explanations of various locations on the East and West islets.

The video helped me understand Dokdo better by providing detailed insights into its various locations.

One of the most impressive experiences was the Dokdo 4D Digital Twin Roller Coaster.

Wearing a VR headset and sitting in the seat,

the experience begins.

Throughout the video, I felt like a bird,

soaring through the skies of Dokdo and the West islet.

Flying over the majestic cliffs and the blue sea of Dokdo was so beautiful that I almost shed tears.

I learned from a staff member that the production team stayed on Dokdo for over 200 days to capture its essence,

making the 4D experience feel like the time and effort were embedded in the video.

In the internal space, I also encountered a 3D stereoscopic video of Dokdo.

With just 3D glasses, even the elderly can enjoy this experience without any burden.

The coastline and rock formations of Dokdo felt like they were pouring out in front of me,

allowing me to physically realize, 'So this is what Dokdo looks like.'

At the entrance, there were learning materials about Dokdo divided by grade levels.

These materials offered an active rather than passive experience.

I even searched for the names of the creatures living in Dokdo during the experience.

There were more species than I expected,

leading me to think, 'Dokdo truly is a treasure island.'

The Dokdo Digital Newspaper and AI Photo Zone were also set up side by side.

Standing in front of a camera, my face was merged with that of a Dokdo newspaper reporter,

and AI blended my face with historical figures from Dokdo to create a portrait.

I selected the portrait of a haenyeo (female diver) at the AI Photo Zone.

The quality was surprisingly high and fascinating,

and I found myself staring at it for a while.

Both the newspaper and portrait can be received via email, making it a nice keepsake.

I recommend experiencing it with family or friends for even more fun.

The Dokdo Digital Book and Digital Encyclopedia corner featured stories of historical figures related to Dokdo, such as Ahn Yong-bok and Lee Sa-bu, presented through animation and voice.

The animation is hand-drawn,

giving it a warm and cozy feel that is easy on the eyes.

It would be great to view this together with children before asking, 'Who is Ahn Yong-bok?'

Touching the screen reveals various information about Dokdo in infographic form.

I was surprised to learn that Dokdo is approximately 4.6 million years old and that there are a total of 91 islands making up Dokdo, not just the East and West islets.

There is a wealth of information about Dokdo, so taking your time to explore would be beneficial.

The interactive media wall and digital aquarium were also engaging.

Touching the sparkling screen made the terrestrial and marine life of Dokdo come alive,

and I enjoyed sending fish back into the sea.

I sent fish like rock bream and yellowtail back into the ocean,

and watching them swim away made me feel good.

I learned that the sea lion, a marine creature associated with Dokdo, has not been recorded since its discovery in 1951,

and that the purple flowers bloom in May and June.

There were also three mini-games for children to enjoy.

'Dokdo Pang', 'Dokdo Crossword', and 'Ahn Yong-bok's Route to Japan.'

'Dokdo Pang' mixes quizzes and games about Dokdo, making it popular among children.

The crossword puzzle required knowledge about Dokdo,

and although it was harder than expected, solving each one helped me learn more about Dokdo.

There was also an exhibition space related to the history of Dokdo.

It was a space worth pausing in,

as it allowed for a moment's rest while slowly reading the materials.

Discover the history of Dokdo recorded in literature,

the reasons why people from Geomun-do and Jeju haenyeo visited Dokdo,

and various names Dokdo has been called throughout history.

Although the exhibition was divided into two parts,

it was a blessing that Dokdo came to our neighborhood,

especially considering how difficult it is to visit Dokdo directly.

The experience allowed me to feel Dokdo with my whole body

and brought me one step closer to it.

This exhibition runs until June 13 at the Suwon Youth Culture Center.

If you haven't been to Dokdo yet or want to share the story of Dokdo with children,

I highly recommend visiting.

The outdoor wildflower park and library provide a great outing.

If you missed this event at the Suwon Youth Culture Center,

it will take place at the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly starting June 19.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly's archive cube offers a digital experience of citizens' lives and assembly records,

making it a great combination with the Dokdo Digital Exhibition for a colorful outing.

The Traveling Dokdo Digital Exhibition will continue through various locations in Gyeonggi Province until November.

This meaningful exhibition allows visitors to rediscover the natural beauty and value of Dokdo.

It's an excellent experience for all generations, from children to grandparents.
