Discovering the Beauty of Namsan Village in Namwon

Namsan Village, located in Juchun-myeon, Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do, is a hidden gem that welcomes the arrival of spring with its vibrant yellow flowers, particularly the Cornelian cherry blossoms.
While many may first think of Gurye in Jeollanam-do when it comes to Cornelian cherries, Namwon boasts equally stunning and serene clusters of these blossoms.
What are Cornelian cherries?
Cornelian cherries are among the first to bloom in early spring, adorning the mountains and fields with their bright yellow flowers. Characterized by clusters of small flowers that create a crown-like shape, they resemble a soft yellow mist from a distance.
In contrast to their cheerful spring blooms, these trees bear ruby-red fruits in the fall, showcasing a striking color even in the winter landscape. The flower symbolizes 'everlasting love' and has historically been a token of affection among lovers. Additionally, the fruit is valued in traditional medicine for enhancing liver and kidney functions, making it a prized tree.
I visited Namsan Village on March 17. Typically, this would be the peak bloom period, but this year, due to fluctuating temperatures nationwide, the blossoms were a bit delayed.
Although the village wasn't completely awash in yellow during my visit, I could still sense the vitality of the Cornelian cherries shyly blooming in various spots.
Upon entering Namsan Village, you will also find Naeyonggung Village nearby. These two villages have coexisted harmoniously with Cornelian cherries for many years. One notable aspect of this area is its tranquility.
In contrast to the bustling crowds at the Gurye Cherry Blossom Festival, Namsan Village is peaceful, making it an ideal spot for leisurely walks while enjoying the sounds of nature.
As I entered the village, I was greeted by charming murals depicting Cornelian cherries and happy families, reflecting the warm atmosphere of the village. After parking at the village community center, I took a leisurely stroll around the area.
The Cornelian cherries along the roadside were beginning to bloom, basking in the warm sunlight. Even before reaching full bloom, the buzzing of bees busy collecting nectar filled the air, creating a lively spring symphony.
I was particularly impressed by the village's stone walls, reminiscent of Jeju Island, built from large stones that add to the village's charm. The green moss growing between the stones hints at the long history of this place.
Walking along the stone paths, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. Friendly village dogs wagged their tails, welcoming visitors and adding to the joy of the journey.
This village retains the essence of a traditional rural community. It features Janganje and Yonggungje reservoirs, which supply water for farming, enhancing the lyrical landscape.
When I asked a local elder about the location of the blossom clusters, she kindly guided me, smiling and suggesting I head further up for a better view.
I also saw farmers diligently working in their fields, where various vegetables were carefully planted, and green onions thrived in the spring warmth.
As I continued up the hill, I reached a bus stop and public restroom, making it accessible via public transportation. However, due to the rural nature of the area, bus schedules may be infrequent, so it's advisable to check the timetable in advance.
At the end of the village, I arrived at the blossom cluster area, which is quite expansive and home to approximately 10,000 Cornelian cherry trees, including some over 100 years old.
This site is also historically significant, dating back to the reign of Queen Jinseong of Silla, where you can feel the majesty of these ancient trees. The harmonious alignment of Cornelian cherries along the paths gives a glimpse of the breathtaking sight when they are in full bloom.
During my visit, the blossoms inside the cluster were slightly behind those along the road, but now that a week has passed, I imagine the entire area is a sea of yellow.
If you wish to enjoy Cornelian cherries in a secret garden away from crowded tourist spots, I highly recommend this place. Namsan Village captures the essence of spring in the most serene way, and I believe it is the most charming location to experience Cornelian cherries in Jeollabuk-do.
As the Cornelian cherries bloom slowly, in harmony with nature, why not take a break from your busy life and create leisurely spring memories here?
Respecting the village's tranquility will ensure a perfect trip. I look forward to sharing more beautiful and informative news from Jeollabuk-do in the future. Until next time!
