Discovering Samnye: A Cultural Day Trip

To see it up close is to appreciate its beauty even more.
Have you ever heard of 'Samnye'?
Whether you are driving, or taking a train or bus,
you might have come across this place at least once.
With dreams wrapped in art,
Samnye is gradually evolving into a cultural city.
Today, let me briefly introduce Samnye through a 'day trip'.
Samnye Station Road 85, Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do
Samnye Station Road 81-13, Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do
Bibi Jeong Art Train, 73-21 Bibi Jeong-gil, Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do
Samnye is a multifaceted space that serves as a resting area for travelers, starting from Samnye Station.
First, let's talk about parking. While there is parking available, it is advisable to use the parking lot at the 'Samnye Cultural and Arts Village' across the street, as it tends to get crowded even on weekdays.
To the right, there is a bike rental service. Let’s take a quick look inside and learn about the bikes.
Starting with 'History', visitors can explore the history of Wanju and Samnye while listening to soft melodies. If desired, you can also receive explanations from a guide.
This is a multipurpose space for travelers.
It is a resting area with tables and seating, where you can also enjoy reading. Gazing out the window, you might feel both joy and awe as trains pass by. On a chilly day, the warm atmosphere might even lull you to sleep.
'Bike Rental'
Exiting to the right, you can find the bike rental service. You can rent a bike for free for two hours with a small deposit. Bring your ID and either cash or a card, and enjoy the ride!
Samnye Cultural and Arts Village
Open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
* Closed every Monday
Admission is free.
The Samnye Cultural and Arts Village holds historical significance from the Japanese colonial era in the 1920s. It was a large granary built to export grains to Japan through the old Samnye and Gunsan stations.
In recent years, the village has transformed into a new 'art village' with a lawn plaza and various art exhibitions. Let’s explore together!
All exhibition halls are free to enter, each with different themes, making it a great travel destination that caters to diverse tastes.
Some areas offer hands-on experiences, and you can learn from artisans as well. The overall calm atmosphere is truly delightful.
There is also a performance venue.
Both outdoor and indoor performance spaces are available. It seems busking is possible here, though there were no performances today, which was a bit disappointing. Despite the chilly weather, I would love to visit again.
The atmosphere and themes vary at each exhibition hall, making each visit a new experience.
While enjoying the cultural experience, I discovered a coffee shop called the Roaster Cafe, located a bit further inside. The new building is clean and stylish, with a beautiful view of a pond.
It felt like stepping into a high-class drama.
Bibi Jeong Art Train
Restaurant - Open daily from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Cafe - Open daily from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Art Shop - Open daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM
The Bibi Jeong Art Train is located on an unused railway, featuring a restaurant, cafe, and art shop.
It’s a place to truly experience the nostalgia of trains.
While there may be a wait due to limited seating, the ambiance is perfect for reminiscing.
The restaurant serves pre-meal soup, pickles, and kimchi. The menu focuses on Western dishes like pork cutlet, pasta, pilaf, and steak. As it is a tourist spot, prices are slightly higher, so I recommend the pork cutlet or pilaf.
After our meal, we moved to the cafe. The river visible from the cafe is the famous Mangyeonggang River in Jeollabuk-do.
The cafe has a cozy atmosphere with gentle music, making it a popular spot. It consists of two sections and also has an outdoor terrace.
While waiting for our order, a cheerful tune caught my attention. To my surprise, a robot serving machine approached our table. Initially, I thought it wasn’t ours, but it soon delivered our order!
Afterward, we stepped outside to the Bibi Jeong area, though it was chilly and quiet. I imagine it would be a lovely spot in the summer evenings.
What do you think? As Samnye continues to grow culturally, I look forward to sharing more about this evolving destination. Have a wonderful day!
