During a five-day trip to Jeju, one unplanned day of driving led to an unexpected and memorable local dining experience.
A quiet road near Jocheon-eup, filled with parked cars, sparked curiosity and revealed a restaurant loved by locals for its hairtail fish dishes.
This visit to Gyoraehyang captured the essence of Jeju cuisine through freshly cooked rice, generous portions, and comforting flavors.
An Unplanned Drive That Led to a Local Favorite
During my five-day trip to Jeju, I set aside one day with no schedule at all. I simply drove along winding roads, planning to stop wherever hunger struck.
On the way toward Jocheon-eup, I noticed a quiet road lined with parked cars outside a restaurant that wasn’t marked on any tourist map.
Curiosity got the best of me, and I soon learned this place was well known among locals for its grilled and braised hairtail fish.
Gyoraehyang Location and Basic Information
The restaurant is called Gyoraehyang, located at 638 Bijarim-ro, Jeju City.
They are open daily from 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM, with regular closures on Thursdays.
The spacious parking area made it easy to visit without stress, even on weekends.
A Calm Arrival and Warm First Impressions
Walking from the parking lot to the restaurant, tall trees provided cool shade and blocked out city noise.
Inside, the atmosphere was simple and clean, and the warm service felt like visiting a relative’s home rather than a busy restaurant.
Families with babies were clearly considered, with cute high chairs available, and ordering through a table kiosk was convenient.
Freshly Cooked Rice That Steals the Spotlight
I learned that rice is cooked only after an order is placed. Inside, rice-cooking machines were lined up, slowly releasing steam as time passed.
When the rice arrived, it looked glossy and inviting. A single bite revealed chewy texture and subtle sweetness, impressive even without toppings.
I already planned to finish the meal by pouring hot water over the remaining rice to enjoy a comforting scorched rice soup.
Braised Hairtail That Defines Jeju Comfort Food
We ordered braised hairtail fish for four, along with black pork stir-fry and rice.
The table quickly filled with neatly arranged side dishes and a steaming red pot of braised hairtail that instantly awakened my appetite.
The fish pieces were thick and generous, far more than expected for a four-person serving.
The spicy and tangy sauce penetrated deeply into the tender flesh, while the radish soaked up the rich broth perfectly.
Grilled Hairtail Served as a Complimentary Highlight
Along with the braised dish, they also served beautifully grilled hairtail.
The staff carefully removed the small bones, making it easy to eat. Pressing the fish with chopsticks caused the moist flesh to flake effortlessly.
The seasoning was balanced and subtle, enhancing the natural flavor without overpowering it.
Black Pork Stir-Fry That Completes the Meal
The black pork stir-fry arrived sizzling, holding its heat thanks to the dish.
It was flavorful without being too spicy or salty, allowing the deep richness of Jeju black pork to stand out.
Paired with freshly cooked rice and the braised hairtail, it rounded out the meal beautifully.
A True Taste of Jeju Worth Going Out of the Way For
The combination of hot rice, spicy braised hairtail, and thoughtfully prepared side dishes made this meal unforgettable.
If you find yourself driving around Bijarim or Jocheon-eup without a plan, I strongly recommend stopping by Gyoraehyang.
It’s the kind of place that reminds you why some of the best meals are found by accident.
