A Culinary Journey in Yeosu: Discovering the Delights of Ganjang Gejang

I have visited Yeosu several times, but for some reason, I always postponed trying ganjang gejang (soy sauce marinated crab). I usually look for sashimi or seafood first, so I realized I had never properly tasted the famous ganjang gejang in Yeosu. This time, I intentionally decided to start my first meal with gejang and took my time exploring the area around Yi Sun-sin Square.
There were more restaurants than I expected, making it hard to choose where to go. Eventually, I decided to visit 'Romantic Byeolsik Expo' with the mindset of enjoying a hearty meal since I had come all the way to Yeosu. I was attracted by the fact that it wasn't just a gejang restaurant, but also offered various seafood dishes and braised hairtail. As I left after the meal, I understood why so many people save this place as a must-visit in Yeosu.
The sign was easily visible from a distance, making it easy to find. Located in the heart of Jungang-dong, it was a perfect spot to visit after exploring Yi Sun-sin Square or the Marine Park.
At the entrance, there were displays of media coverage and visitor testimonials. It felt genuine, as if many people had visited over a long time.
The interior was much more pleasant than I had anticipated. The blue-toned decor gave a refreshing impression, and there was ample space between tables, making it easy to enjoy a meal without being disturbed.
On the wall, there was an explanation about the secret soy sauce made from mountain ginseng and deer antler. It impressed me that they infused a philosophy into their food, not just selling gejang. This attention to detail helped me understand why this place is rated as one of the best in Yeosu.
The self-service bar was neatly organized. Aprons and utensils were neatly arranged, allowing guests to use what they needed comfortably, and I appreciated the overall tidy atmosphere.
There was also information about takeout options on one side. It felt like they considered the guests' perspective by preparing food that could be enjoyed at home after traveling.
The refrigerator contained takeout gejang, stored neatly. Seeing it firsthand, I could tell they took great care in managing their ingredients. This meticulousness seemed to be the reason why they have been loved for a long time as a top restaurant in Yeosu.
After a while, the table was set, and my gaze froze. I thought only gejang would be served, but a variety of dishes filled the table. Just looking at it gave a satisfying feeling of a traditional Korean meal.
The side dishes exceeded my expectations. Instead of being overly stimulating, they had a comforting taste, allowing me to keep eating while waiting for the main dish.
One of the dishes that kids would love was the bulgogi side. There were many family guests, and the composition satisfied both adults and children, which was great.
Personally, I was most surprised by the seven types of seafood. Shrimp, scallops, sea cucumber, conch, boiled squid, fermented skate, and seasoned flounder all came together on the table. It felt like a taste of the Yeosu sea, making it a fitting presentation for a top restaurant in Yeosu.
The main dish, ganjang gejang, looked delicious just by appearance. The clear, glossy soy sauce enveloped the crab, and the overall visual was very clean.
When I picked up the crab, I found it was filled with roe. The moment I took a bite, instead of an overpowering saltiness, a subtle umami flavor slowly spread in my mouth. I understood why so many people recommend this place as a top restaurant in Yeosu.
A platter of abalone, shrimp, and egg gejang was also served. Each had a different flavor, making it fun to choose, and the seasoning was not overwhelming, allowing me to keep eating.
The seasoned gejang showed another charm. The generous red seasoning was not just spicy; it had a subtle umami flavor that I enjoyed.
When I mixed the crab meat with rice, the seasoning had soaked through nicely. The more I ate, the more addictive the flavor became, and I found myself reaching for more.
I highly recommend the combination of rice and seasoned gejang wrapped in seaweed. The savory aroma of the seaweed combined with the umami of the seasoned gejang greatly enhanced my satisfaction. At that moment, I felt I had made the right choice visiting a top restaurant in Yeosu.
The braised hairtail exceeded my expectations as well. The seasoning penetrated deeply into the fish, and it could be enjoyed cleanly without any fishy smell. It had a strong presence next to the gejang.
The hairtail meat was quite thick. When I picked the meat with chopsticks, it came off in large pieces, and it was soft yet retained a satisfying texture.
In the end, I finished my meal by mixing rice with the braised hairtail seasoning. It was a fulfilling meal from start to finish, and it became one of the most memorable meals of my trip.
While many places are known for their delicious gejang, considering the overall quality of the seafood, side dishes, and braised hairtail, Romantic Byeolsik Expo is definitely a place I would want to revisit. If you're looking for a hearty Korean meal during your travels, this restaurant in Yeosu's Yi Sun-sin Square is worth a visit.
