Wanju's Chungheon Facility, Wanju Independence Memorial Hall

"In honor of the noble sacrifices of the patriots and independence activists from Wanju"

Reporter: Kim Wangjoong, Wanju County Blog Reporter

June is the month of national defense and remembrance, and I visited a memorial facility in Wanju County.

This is the Wanju Independence Memorial Hall located in Gyeongcheon-myeon.

It was established to honor the noble sacrifices of the patriots and independence activists from Wanju and to pass on the correct historical perspective to future generations.

I explored the background of the memorial hall and its facilities.

To get to the Wanju Independence Memorial Hall, you pass through Gosan-myeon towards Daedunsan, going through the small town of Gyeongcheon-myeon.

As a small town, it has a simple atmosphere with only a post office and an administrative welfare center being noticeable.

After passing through the town, you will soon encounter Yongbok Tunnel.

Upon exiting the tunnel, you will reach an intersection with a roundabout.

To the right at the roundabout is the road to Hwaamsa Temple, while the opposite side leads to the Wanju Independence Memorial Hall.

As you approach the memorial hall, you will see Korean flags fluttering along both sides of the path.

The parking lot next to the Wanju Independence Memorial Hall is quite spacious and free, making it convenient to park.

After parking, I stood at the entrance of the memorial hall. There is a monument next to the entrance of the traditional Korean house.

The area around the monument was adorned with blooming yellow daylilies, conveying gratitude to the spirits of the patriotic martyrs.

Inside the Wanju Independence Memorial Hall, you can see the national defense monument dedicated to patriot Jang Byeong-gu.

During the Japanese occupation, he gathered comrades to print banknotes to fund the independence movement, which led to his arrest and six years of harsh imprisonment.

In recognition of his contributions, the South Korean government awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1992.

His descendants erected the national defense monument in 1994 to promote awareness of the anti-Japanese movement, which became the foundation of the current Wanju Independence Memorial Hall.

Next to the national defense monument is the main building of the memorial hall, which exhibits valuable artifacts and documents related to local independence activists.

Although the names of the independence activists displayed were not widely known, I realized that they were all heroes who contributed to today's nation.

The memorial hall is well-maintained and serves as an excellent educational space to remember the sacrifices of the patriots from Wanju.

I encourage everyone to visit during the month of June, a time for remembrance.
